Shelter Veterinary Assistant

The Role
As a Veterinary Assistant on our Shelter Medical Team, the core of your responsibilities revolves around keeping both the animals at our shelter happy and healthy. You'll be assisting in animal handling, providing care, treatment, medicating, record keeping, and data entry of our shelter dogs and cats. General duties include:
- Entering and maintaining animal information in our PetPoint software
- Work with all departments regarding animal information
- Provide for the husbandry needs of the animals in the treatment room
- Assist the Shelter Medical Team in evaluating and treating animals. This includes performing physical exams, vaccinating, parasite checks, performing diagnostic tests, and medicating animals while under the supervision of the Shelter Veterinarian
- Prepare paperwork and medications on shelter animals needing treatment
Who are we looking for?
- Required: six months to one-year veterinary related experience and/or training
- Preferred: six months to one-year animal welfare related experience and/or training
- Enthusiasm for the mission of the Humane Society of Charlotte and helping animals and people in our community
- Exceptional verbal and written skills, including clear and effective communication with others (staff, public, volunteers) that is professional, respectful, positive, and educational
- High level ability to prioritize, organize and perform detailed tasks efficiently and with accuracy
- Comfortability in the safe handling of domestic dogs and cats; Fear Free Certification is a plus!
- Ability to be objective, diplomatic and informative
- Basic math abilities; able to present numerical data effectively
- Must be willing to work flexible hours when needed
- Must have a reliable mode of transportation
- Must be comfortable interacting with dogs and cats
