This is skilled, technical field inspection and code enforcement work in the City’s Planning & Development Services Department, ensuring compliance with City codes and ordinances, State of Florida Building Codes, and national and local technical standards for workmanship and safety governing the installation, operation, maintenance and alteration of mechanical systems and related equipment in structures of all types throughout the city. Work involves responsibility to ensure regulatory compliance and to determine the existence of substandard or tampered conditions; the review of blueprints and specifications outlining proposed mechanical installation activities for possible regulatory conflict; the issuance of stop work orders on unpermitted construction and substandard mechanical systems and related components; and the recommendation of necessary changes to meet required technical standards. An employee in this class must be able to make sound, well informed recommendations and decisions; to enforce regulations, laws and codes with firmness, tact and impartiality; and to effectively communicate with builders, architects, engineers, contractors and journeymen regarding compliance issues, frequently of a sensitive nature. Employees working in this classification, pursuant to a Labor Agreement, are eligible for additional pay incentives for each State of Florida Inspector and/or Plans Examiner certifications that are maintained for other trades.

Salary: $33.06 - $48.61 Hourly

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications.

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess and continue to maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Have at least three (3) years of responsible experience as a journeyman or contractor in the installation of mechanical equipment, or as a mechanical inspector.
  • Possess and maintain a standard or provisional mechanical inspector license from the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Have some experience in the use of a personal computer.

Desirable Qualifications.

  • Will possess or be able to obtain additional licenses as an electrical or plumbing inspector and have considerable knowledge of municipal, state, regional and national regulatory codes and ordinances, especially the current Florida Building Code-Mechanical, with respect to building mechanical installations.
  • Have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of related inspection and code enforcement, and of the assembly, installation, maintenance and operation of a variety of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Are able to understand, inspect, and determine regulatory compliance using plans, blueprints, drawings and diagrams.
  • Have five or more years of professional experience working for a mechanical contractor.
  • Have some experience with plumbing and electrical inspections.
  • Possess additional State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation building inspector licenses and plan review license.
