SUMMARY: We are currently seeking a casual Pharmacy Technician to join our Hospital Community Pharmacy team. This position is casual, no benefits, day/evening shift, and rotating weekends.
Purpose of this position: Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, performs a variety of technical and clerical duties allowable by law, while maintaining a favorable image of the pharmacy within the hospital and in the community.
Responsibilities:
- Answers phones for the pharmacy department and directs calls to appropriate personnel.
- Maintains knowledge of the Hospital Credit and Collection Policy and other related policies.
- Prepackages, prepares, labels, and hands out prescriptions after they are checked by a registered pharmacist.
- Maintains cash registers, credit card machines, and reporting for cash transactions.
- Prepares daily deposits for the cashier’s office.
- Bills and credits patient medications.
- Stocks inventory in Pharmacy.
- Routinely checks and removes outdated and expired medications.
- Delivers medications to patient care and ancillary areas and picks up new orders as scheduled.
- Files prescriptions and reports.
- Maintains the pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion.
- Enters outpatient prescriptions.
- Obtains and records patient drug histories.
- Triages orders, determines priorities, processes orders, and notifies the pharmacist as appropriate.
- Performs various calculations to determine the correct dose using weight.
- Identifies the appropriate product to process based on the prescription order.
- Triages insurance rejections and initiates prior authorization claims as needed.
- Uses appropriate pharmaceutical-medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols.
- Maintains a working knowledge of general chemical and physical properties of drugs.
- Compounding medications as per Minnesota Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations.
- Is responsible for safe and careful handling of chemotherapeutic medications.
- Assists with other duties as assigned but only after appropriate training.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Computer skills.
- Knowledge of Pharmacy computer systems.
- Insurance and Billing Experience.
- Experience working with specialty medications in a health system setting.
- Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or a 240-hour employer-based Technician training Program or 1,000 hours of Pharmacy experience.

- Demonstrates good decision making skills, problem solving techniques, and possesses the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to use a computer and associated programs.
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn and apply pharmacy procedures and interpret prescriptions.
- Ability to apply basic math skills.
- Some skill in record keeping.
License/Certifications:
- Current Pharmacy Technician Registration with MN State Board.
- PTCB or ExCPT pharmacy tech certification within 1 year of date of hire, paid for by employee.
- -OR-
- Current Intern License with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy.
