Summary: We are looking for a Director of Database Administration to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will lead, develop, and mentor a team of technical database experts in managing both on-premise and cloud databases, including Oracle OCI, Azure SQL, SQL Server, PostGre SQL, RedShift, Snowflake, and MySQL.
Classification Summary:
Under limited supervision, administers multiple enterprise systems which have a university wide critical impact to core operational infrastructure. Sets strategic direction, and recommends institutional policy for enterprise information technology. Works with internal departments/units to identify opportunities to improve and refine services to meet their needs. Participates in the investigation, selection, and operation of information systems.
Classification Standard Duties:
Directs departmental operations and supervises employees directly and through lower level managers and supervisors. Participates in development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, objectives, short- and long-range planning; develops tracking and evaluation programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals. Develops and establishes policies and objectives consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient operation of individual departments. Consults and coordinates with university officials on matters of policy, interdivisional interaction, and capital improvement issues. Collaborates with departments and administration to establish goals and priorities for technology solutions to meet institutional needs. Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.Develops and administers budgets and plans for technology development and deployment at the institution. Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on University planning and policy-making committees. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education: Bachelors degree: Eight (8) years of experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined;
Equivalency: Completion of a post-secondary degree may substitute for years of experience.;

The Director of Database Administration is responsible for leading, developing and mentoring a team of technical database subject matter experts in the administration of on premise and cloud databases, more specifically, Oracle OCI, Azure SQL, SQL Server, PostGre SQL, RedShift, Snowflake, MySQL, etc... This position will report to the CIO and will provide expert level of support for database backups, database recovery, upgrades, patching, performance tuning, storage/server cost management. In this role you will play a pivotal role in maintaining and managing the current environment(s) ensuring all databases are running current versions including patch management. Support all projects that require database changes, provide application teams with database tuning expertise, and ensure the database environments are available 99.99% of the time across all application environments. Provide the CIO with availability dashboards including introducing support automation where and when opportunities present themselves. Develop and maintain strong relationships with the application teams and external customers outside of IT. Leverage your skills to actively listen, problem solving, and being transparent with your IT and business partners in communicating successes and challenges. - Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for database recovery and data archiving to ensure protection, maximum availability and integrity of data assets.
- Coordinate with project managers and project teams to plan and schedule work activities. Provide feedback on project plans and adhere to delivery schedules
- Coordinate with your peers and the business to implement the planned installation and/or upgrade of new database software releases and patches. Assist with monitoring and performance tuning of databases to constantly look at ways to improve performance
- Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services and standards in support of project development efforts
- Create and maintain documentation of all production policies, procedures, database server configurations, error logs, maintenance records and product troubleshooting
- Work with the application teams to create capacity plans, capacity plans are required for each application that interfaces to the databases you are responsible for
- Monitor and continuously manage database workloads to achieve maximum throughput and performance.
Preferred Qualifications
ITIL is preferred.
