Technical Specialist - AIR MONITORING (Health Services)

Position Summary
This position is funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grantor.
Plans, directs, and performs complex and comprehensive work in the chemical, biological, or engineering aspects of scientific and technical activities.
Pay Grade: 48
Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education
Application Special Instructions
This position is eligible for a HIRING BONUS outlined below: 1st payment of $1500 paid after completion of six (6) months of service 2nd payment of $1500 paid after completion of twelve (12) months of service 3rd payment of $2000 paid after completion of eighteen (18) months of service.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Two (2) years of experience in an environmental public health laboratory or public health; AND
2. Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental health, chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, or a related field; OR
3. An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.
4. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Operates, maintains, and calibrates an air monitoring network of continuous analyzers and fixed-frequency samplers.
2. Diagnoses, repairs, and recalibrates air monitoring instrumentation.
3. Collects, stores, and reports air quality data.
4. Performs precision quality control checks of the air monitoring equipment.
5. Participates in state and federal audits to ensure accuracy of monitored data.
6. Certifies the transfer standards against the primary standards in the laboratory for use in the calibration of field analyzers.
7. Maintains quality control records and documentation.
8. Verifies quality control activities are performed, and quality objectives are met.
9. Attends various meetings and EPA workshops.
10. Assists with establishing new air monitoring stations.
11. Consults with individuals or organizations requiring or providing technical assistance.
12. Performs other related duties as required or directed.
KSAs
1. Knowledge of technical terminology in air pollution.
2. Knowledge of instrumentation fault-finding principles and corrective action procedures.
3. Ability to coordinate the field sampling activities in accordance with EPA regulations.
4. Ability to provide technical assistance and coordinates projects.
5. Ability to discuss air pollution control problems.
6. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Air Vision, RP Comm, API Com.
Physical Requirements
1. Must be able to climb ladders/scaffolding, rooftops, carry up to 60 lbs. and move equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.
2. Must be able to work in all types of weather.
3. Must successfully pass a physical assessment.
Special Requirements
1. Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one by date of employment.
2. Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet county requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
3. Must be able to travel within Shelby County as required.
