Essential Job Duties
Join us as an Accountant II within the Capital Project Management group! This vital role serves as the lead accounting and budget resource, driving financial planning, forecasting, and reconciliation for departmental operations. You’ll collaborate with various stakeholders, oversee critical processes, and play a key role in supporting university infrastructure projects.
This position also supervises and mentors Accounting Technicians, ensuring accurate and efficient handling of routine financial tasks. With opportunities to engage with state-level organizations like UNC-General Administration and the Office of State Budget and Management, you’ll leverage your expertise to manage budgets, develop financial strategies, and ensure compliance with university policies. Key Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:
- Independently manage and reconcile capital funding budgets, providing accurate forecasting and detailed financial planning to align with departmental goals
- Prepare and present clear and comprehensive reports to explain budget statuses and financial performance to diverse audiences
- Apply thorough knowledge of PeopleSoft and Interscope to manage transactions, provide training, and ensure compliance with system updates and changes
- Regularly reconcile capital funding and departmental receipts (DCSA) accounts, producing detailed and current financial status reports
- Conduct audits, identify discrepancies, and thoroughly research issues to develop and implement effective solutions
- Serve as the primary approver for departmental requisitions, vouchers, and other financial actions
- Continuously evaluate systems of financial control, recommending and implementing improvements as needed
- Collaborate with project managers, directors, and university budget staff to compile and share financial data, ensuring clarity and accuracy
- Plan and oversee the work of Accounting Technicians, providing ongoing training, feedback, and support to uphold departmental standards
- Work with administrative staff on project close-out activities, record retention, and reporting for capital project management
- Partner with Grounds and Building Services, university leadership, and external agencies to ensure alignment of budgetary processes with institutional goals
Other Responsibilities
- Contribute to hiring processes by participating in interviews and making informed recommendations for new hires

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in Accounting; or Associate’s degree in Business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in general accounting principles and their practical application
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to diverse audiences, including stakeholders at various levels
Preferred Qualifications
- Progressive experience with maintaining budgets, monitoring spending plans, providing budget reconciliation, forecasting, and production of reports to communicate information
