Lead Medical Assistant

The Lead Medical Assistant is an allied health professional who works under the guidance of the clinical and administrative leadership of a single or multiple practices. He/she serves as a mentor and support to other medical assistants, student externs, and any other non-licensed practice staff within and across assigned practices. In addition to the expanded lead role, he/she performs all the required functions of a Medical Assistant, demonstrating proficiency in assigned clinical responsibilities, serving as a role model for promoting excellent care with compassion, maintaining effective and efficient workflows, and interacting with patients, families, and other colleagues in a friendly manner promoting excellent patient experiences.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Leadership and Operations
- Serves as a role model and mentor, providing support, training, and direction to other Medical Assistants, student externs, and non-licensed staff within the assigned practice(s). May oversee compliance and regulatory matters, referring issues to the Practice Manager.
- Acts as a lead person in daily operations of the office, researching, prioritizing, and following up on incoming issues and concerns addressed to the Practice Manager, including sensitive and confidential matters. Works closely with the Manager or their designee to determine the appropriate course of action.
- Responsible for working closely with Practice Manager(s), physicians, nursing staff, and other clinical providers to ensure the effective and efficient flow of patients.
- Takes the lead on supporting non-licensed staff with changes in workflow, computer systems, and office process changes. Identifies training needs and supports team member development.
Patient Care and Preparation
- Completes pre-visit planning, including the review of clinical assessments, ensuring test results and consult reports are available, and understanding the patient’s purpose for the appointment.
- Receives and prepares patients for exams, greeting them warmly, determining if there is an acute medical need, and recording pertinent patient information into Epic per practice protocol.
Clinical Duties
- Performs medical assisting duties, including vital signs, EKGs, phlebotomy, and dressing changes, and assists during specialized testing or procedures.
- Maintains exam rooms, equipment, and inventory levels, ensuring equipment is sanitized and in good working order, and follows established policies for cleaning and disposing of hazardous materials.
- Assists with office-based clinical procedures and exams, serving as a chaperone as requested.
- Completes point of care office-based testing and performs quality control testing on office-based test kits.
Medication and Referral Management
- Administers medications and injections as ordered by the provider, documenting all activity in the patient’s electronic record.
- Coordinates and assists with scheduling and tracking of outside tests, procedures, and referrals to specialists.
Patient Communication and Follow-up
- Facilitates patient communication, returning calls on the provider’s behalf, and coordinating follow-up for missed appointments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate or GED with 2-3 years of experience in Medical Assisting.
- Competencies acquired through certification or degree programs in Medical Assisting or related fields.
- Strong customer and interpersonal relationships with patients and staff.
- Experience with computer systems and web-based applications; EPIC experience preferred.
- Certification in CPR required.
Physical Requirements & Environment:
- Job requires physical stamina; ability to lift 10lbs and position patients for procedures and exams.
- Must be adaptable to change and capable of working in a fast-paced environment.
