Admitting Clerk

Job Summary:
Under direct supervision, admits patients to the hospital and reviews all required documents for completeness and appropriate signatures; types appropriate forms and assembles accurate and complete records; prepares identification armbands and admission cards; receives valuables and may assist in bed assignments.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws.
- Verifies eligibility and obtains authorization for admitting patients to the hospital. Explains admission process, hospital regulations, policies and procedures. Interviews patients or their representatives to obtain required information and makes referrals to Financial Counseling as necessary. Collects and informs patients of required co-payments/deposits as necessary. Reviews reports for coordination of benefits.
- Reviews all required documents for completeness and required signatures. Prepares patient armbands. Performs pre-admission functions for surgery and labor & delivery cases. Collaborates with nursing and other clinical departments to facilitate bed assignments for non-elective and elective admissions to the hospital.
- Processes death certificates for Kaiser Permanente members. Secures and releases patient valuables.
- Assists in Quality Improvement monitoring as necessary.
- Performs reception duties as required including but not limited to answering phones, greeting members at the front desk, and relieving other clerks for breaks and lunches as appropriate. Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with other personnel, Health Plan members and the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management team and/or lead admitting clerk.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
- One (1) year cash handling experience in hospital admitting, business office or medical office setting.
- Typing 25 wpm or as required by Medical Center.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the duties and responsibilities required of an Admitting Clerk.
- Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.
Education
- High School Diploma/GED
License, Certification, Registration
- N/A
Preferred Qualifications:
- Medical Terminology.
Notes:
- Availability of On-Call staff to be at minimum, 10 days per month to include 4 weekend shifts.
- This is an on call position, days and hours may vary.
