Terracon’s Texas Division is seeking a skilled professional to review and edit technical documents for accuracy, clarity, and consistency, with strong attention to detail, proficiency in editing software (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe InDesign) and expertise in the field of environmental science preferred. Our Texas Division team works collaboratively with Environmental practice areas throughout the state of Texas to support Terracon’s regional, statewide, and national client base. We are seeking a candidate who understands and is committed to our quality assurance program, is a strong communicator, and who will bring technical expertise and depth to our program. The role is part time, as needed, with the ability to transition to a full-time, salaried position.
The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, historic preservationists, conservationists, environmental scientists and engineers, and geotechnical professionals. The qualified candidate will have strong technical editing capabilities, must be able to fact-check, ensure proper terminology, format documents using Terracon style guides, and collaborate with report authors to present ideas in a well-thought-out and comprehensive manner. This is an excellent opportunity for a self-motivated individual with strong communication and practical experience to excel in a team environment.
Essential Role and Responsibilities:
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report safety challenges or concerns to management.
- Provide document control for the project according to the established processes to ensure adherence to quality standards and the project requirements.
- Promote continuous quality review and improvement on projects, collaborating with team to refine content and identify areas for improvement.
- Ensure proper use of technical terminology and industry standards.
- Identify and address inconsistencies in formatting and style.
- Provide constructive feedback to authors on technical accuracy and clarity of writing.
- Creating templates for report authors that are easy to apply and adapt.
- Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risks. Employ best practices for risk management and loss prevention. Learn and comply with company risk management policies.
- Other duties as assigned by the Austin Environmental Planning Group Manager and/or the Texas Division Environmental Service Line Director.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, applied science, engineering, or related discipline and 3–5 years of experience as a technical editor or related role
- Overnight travel may be required with this position
- Flexible work schedule, to ensure project timelines are completed
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history, with the capability to drive full-sized pickup trucks
- Ability to pass a drug screen and background check
Preferences:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and page composition skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with an ability to adhere to deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multi-discipline teams
