Job Story

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean, the Executive Director of Career and Professional Development (OCPD) will be responsible for leading all activities promoting personal and professional advancements for undergraduate and graduate students. The Executive Director will define the vision for the newly launched Office of Career and Professional Development and design strategies to promote the Barton Experience—an overarching program aimed at developing pride, career readiness and emotional attachment in students. The Barton Experience includes professional development workshops, internship tracks and signature programs such as Executive-in-Residence, Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Executive Speaker Series, and Professional Edge. The Executive Director will be responsible for developing, managing, and renewing the strategies of the OCPD, as well as leading the office to become globally renowned in student experience.

Job Summary

Develops and implements the vision and strategic plan for the delivery of student leadership education programs. Establishes program goals and objectives and continually evaluates the effectiveness of such programs. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships and partnerships with others, both internally and externally.

Essential Functions

  • Identifies potential new clients and establishes relationships. Works closely with existing external clients to assess their needs for workforce skills and develops student programs to meet those needs.
  • Develops and maintains data and analytical routines to evaluate program success, quality and external partner satisfaction and to identify needs for new programs.
  • Maintains close contact with Deans and other leaders of the University; works with other colleges and professional organizations nationwide to monitor career trends.
  • Collaborates with the Foundation to coordinate fund raising opportunities.
  • Recruits presenters and ensures effective student programs and presentations.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field
  • Seven (7) years of experience leading university or corporate executive education and/or leadership training programs

  • Demonstrated experience as an innovative, visionary, and strategic leader and a collaborative, team player with a positive, service-oriented attitude.
  • Skilled in leading, motivating and developing a diverse team of professionals.
  • Skilled in fundraising and stakeholder engagement.
  • Sound understanding of the job market, labor research and employment trends across a range of industries and professions, latest career coaching approaches, as well as job placement skills such as resume development, interview preparation and salary negotiation.
  • Strong understanding of social media and its role in employment and hiring practices.
  • Ability to develop and execute career readiness programming and engage with college students.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically and exercise independent judgment.
  • Strong, adaptable interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work and influence partnership with a variety of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Strong analytical skills. Experience presenting data to for executive decision making.
  • Ability to foster sustained relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and industry partners.
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate different student populations, including undergraduates, graduates, adult learners and working professionals.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite.
