The Opportunity
Ulteig is seeking a per diem Environmental Specialist to facilitate environmental compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations for public and private clients across all of our Lifeline Sectors: Transportation, Renewables, Power, and Water, as well as other industries we serve. Our goal is to assist clients with developing an approach to environmental compliance and due diligence that balances development with natural and cultural resources protection. This position will be based in our office in Bismarck, North Dakota.
The Environmental Specialist will support new and existing projects primarily conducting field data collection (e.g., reclamation, stormwater, wetlands, biology, construction monitoring). Experience in environmental analysis and compliance will be needed to prepare technical reports. The applicant should have direct experience with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), wetland delineation, biological resources, historic/cultural resources, and/or environmental due diligence surveys/documentation/approvals. This team member will not typically have direct contact with regulatory agencies and clients. This person will work with multidisciplinary project teams, with proven experience as a team player through the process. The successful candidate must be detail oriented, have strong oral and written communication skills, and be able to prioritize and work simultaneously on multiple projects.
What You’ll Do
- Participate in project field efforts (wildlife, botanical, water, etc.)
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams for the purpose of preparing reports (e.g., NEPA documents, wetland delineation reports, biological assessments, noise analysis, environmental site assessments, etc.) and environmental permit applications in support of projects for various industries and markets
- Review and interpretate data as part of new or ongoing investigations, mitigation, or monitoring projects
- Communicate scientific and technical information to the project team
- Prepare environmental reports and related materials
- Assist public and private clients with permit coordination, acquisition, and compliance
What We Expect from You
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in environmental science, environmental planning, environmental policy, biology, wildlife management, range management, natural resources management, or related field
- 3-5 years of related experience (advanced degree may count toward experience)
- Basic understanding of and experience with relevant Federal, State, and Local regulations (e.g., NEPA; Endangered Species Act [ESA]; Clean Water Act [CWA]; Clean Air Act [CAA]; National Historic Preservation Act [NHPA]; Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act [CERCLA]; Resource Conservation and Recovery Act [RCRA]) as they relate to environmental review and approval/permitting of projects
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Effective time-management, written communication, analytical and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively independently and in team situations as well as establish strong relationships with other teams
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and applicable industry-related software packages (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps)
- Must have authorization to work permanently in the US
- Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a 4-wheel drive pickup; trailering and utility terrain vehicle (UTV) operation experience is a plus
- Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to walk at least 5 miles per day in rough terrain and at least 10 miles per day in flat terrain
- Must be capable of using shovels, pounding stakes, opening/closing gates, changing tires, and other duties/equipment associated with fieldwork
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Must be willing to travel frequently for fieldwork in remote areas with overnight stays
- Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.
