Dr. Gwenn Hennon at UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) is seeking a full-time Research Professional in Biological Oceanography with a focus on Phytoplankton. The Hennon lab studies phytoplankton ecology using flow cytometry, culturing, and molecular tools (https://www.hennonlab.com/). This position will play a crucial role in coordinating and participating in field work and data analysis for the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research project (https://nga.lternet.edu/) and other funded projects.
CFOS is a geographically diverse unit with headquarters in Fairbanks with additional locations in Anchorage, Seward Marine Center, NOAA-UAF Kasitsna Bay Laboratory, and Juneau Lena Point Fisheries Facility. The College has over 150 faculty, researchers and staff based throughout Alaska, offering a rich and collaborative research environment.
To thrive in this role, the ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in molecular biology and microbial ecology. Well qualified applicants will be skilled in techniques such as gDNA extraction, PCR, and amplicon sequence analysis using bioinformatics pipelines (e.g.: Qiime2). Additionally, candidates should possess the ability to manage large data sets, track archived samples, and ensure proper data submission to repositories. A demonstrated capability to synthesize data and apply statistical tests using programming languages such as R is essential. The role also requires effective coordination of complex field logistics and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented science environment, including working in sometimes challenging conditions at sea.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree plus several years of experience with the above defined work; OR a master's degree with 0-2 years of relevant postgraduate experience.
- A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria is required.
- Position requires lifting of up to 25lbs and strenuous physical activity both indoors and outdoors.
- Must be able to work in wet and cold environments.
Position Details:
This position is located on the UAF Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental, and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
