The Service Technician is responsible for working independently repairing bailers and other recycling equipment within the Chicagoland area, covering parts of Chicago, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan. This role involves daily travel to customer sites to diagnose and repair equipment, ensuring minimal downtime and high customer satisfaction. When not on the road, the technician will work in the company shop to perform in-house repairs, maintenance, and refurbishing of used equipment. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to delivering high-quality service both on-site and in-shop. Additionally, the candidate should be able to interpret schematics, have familiarity with light welding techniques, and possess experience with programmable logic controllers, as well as horizontal and vertical scrap balers, conveyors, and other recycling machinery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Travel to customer locations to install, troubleshoot, repair/diagnose, and resolve issues with machinery related to assembly, hydraulic systems, electrical control systems, and mechanical functions.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the operation, maintenance, and repair of hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, and associated components.
  • Understand and interpret electrical schematics, troubleshoot electrical faults, and perform repairs or replacements as necessary.
  • Possess a strong understanding of mechanical systems and components, including bearings, gears, belts, and chains, to effectively troubleshoot and repair machinery.
  • Utilize light welding techniques to perform repairs on metal components and structures as needed.
  • Conduct maintenance and repair tasks on horizontal and vertical scrap balers, conveyors, and other recycling machinery to ensure operational efficiency and safety.
  • Interact with customers to assess equipment issues, provide technical guidance, and offer solutions to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, parts used, and equipment status to support reporting and future troubleshooting efforts.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, regulations, and guidelines while performing maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting tasks to ensure a safe working environment for oneself and others.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.

Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to travel daily
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications or relevant vocational training preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Proven experience in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining machinery, with a focus on hydraulic systems, electrical control systems, and mechanical functions.
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, cylinders, and fluid dynamics.
  • Proficiency in interpreting electrical schematics and diagnosing electrical faults.
  • Welding experience with proficiency in light welding techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers and colleagues.
  • Commitment to safety protocols and regulations.

Work Environment:

  • On-the-road: Most of the time will be spent traveling to customer sites in the Chicagoland area.
  • In-shop: Time spent in the company’s shop during slow periods or when in-house repairs are needed.

Physical and Personal Attributes:

  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs.
  • Detail-oriented with strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
