Under the general supervision of the Pathology Manager or Phlebotomy Supervisor, performs a variety of activities including phlebotomy procedures, registration, test orders, specimen tracking and processing, overseeing scheduling, assigning and training phlebotomists, as well as performing clerical and secretarial functions in support of the department. All functions are carried out in consideration of the aging processes, human development stages, cultural patterns, and patient choice in each step of the care process.
Responsibilities
- Performs various functions associated with the computer system to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens, including patient registration, identification, and verification.
- Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN) processes.
- Performs related clerical activities such as medical necessity follow-up, sorting and filing records, and answering phones.
- Maintains/monitors standing orders for expiration and renewals.
- Provides patient with forms and instructions necessary prior to specimen collection.
- Monitors Workbrain for phlebotomists and reviews Kronos reports with manager.
- Ensures compliance with department call-out protocols.
- Works with manager to ensure accuracy of payroll records.
- Monitors Document Imaging and conducts random audits with Customer Service.
- Tracks errors, notifies, and provides feedback to staff, and participates in training and competency assessments.
- Acts as liaison with physicians and their staff related to Patient Service Centers.
- Assists with phlebotomy of patients and may perform certain waived laboratory tests.
- Updates and maintains training and operational manuals.
- Understands and follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Phlebotomy certificate and/or completion of a certificate program with formal internship.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of phlebotomy experience required.
- Ability to perform venipunctures and capillary punctures on all age groups.
- Interpersonal skills to explain procedures and allay patient fears.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Works in in-patient care environments with considerable walking and some physical effort required.
- Exposure to odors and communicable diseases minimized by infection control procedures.
