As a key contributor to major and planned gift fundraising, the Development Manager works in conjunction with the Director of Development to design and execute the strategy and management of Development related activities and systems. Additionally, the role is responsible for managing a portfolio of planned giving donors and prospects, often conducting in-person visits to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward planned giving commitments.
This position is located at our headquarters in Missoula, MT and is not remote.
Essential Functions
The Development Manager oversees the management of the Major & Planned Gift Specialist role and their related administrative responsibilities.
Education And Experience
Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in communication, marketing, and/or business administration plus at least 3 years-experience in non-profit fundraising or sales. Basic knowledge in planned giving vehicles and tax implications, as well as experience in cultivating donor/customer relationships. Supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Office work will require sitting or standing for long periods of time, frequent use of office equipment such as telephones, and computers, and light lifting, bending, and physical exertion. This position requires extensive travel including by automobile and airplane. Work will occasionally require more than the standard number of hours per week to perform essential duties of the position and require occasional irregular hours both during the week and on weekends.

Essential Functions
- Manage and maintain a portfolio of 50 – 70 planned giving donors and prospects who are interested in making a significant contribution to RMEF through their estate plans.
- Under the guidance of the Director of Development, manage strategies to promote future commitments through wills, trusts, beneficiary designations, and annuities.
- Assist in the design, strategy, and execution of RMEF’s donor recognition programs that work to thank and engage RMEF supporters.
- Under the guidance of the Director of Development, manage the creation and distribution of major gift communication and stewardship tools such as impact reports, elevated recognition, conservation newsletters, and the annual report.
- In coordination with the Director of Development, manage and improve Development related programs and processes, including the database and other tools used by the department.
- Assist in the planning and administration of Development related major giving and prospect events.
- Other duties as requested by the Director of Development.

- Knowledge and support of the RMEF’s mission, goals, and activities, and ability to discuss organizational information with staff, board, volunteers, members, prospective and current donors, and other outside parties.
- Ability to develop program process to address organizational fundraising needs.
- Must understand different major gift fundraising strategies, planned giving and other philanthropic giving, and have the ability to implement these strategies.
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints, working at a fast pace and remaining accurate. Must be able to manage workflow of staff.
- Ability to communicate using multiple media tools.
- Ability to understand financial reports. Must be effective in developing and managing budgets including tracking expenses and revenue to achieve short- and long-term goals.
- Must possess analytical skills and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism with the ability to work constructively with a wide variety of entities including staff, donors, volunteers.
- Working knowledge of wildlife and elk management.
- Must have excellent communications skills both written and verbal. Must demonstrate effective public speaking skills.
- Ability to manage stressful situations and conflict.
- Ability to effectively manage, lead, and mentor the Development staff.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and relational databases.
