Opportunity
The R&D Manager will lead a team of chemists and technicians while actively participating in hands-on formulation and development work, serving as both a leader and technical contributor. This role is responsible for managing formulation projects across a range of adhesive chemistries, including but not limited to epoxies, urethanes, UV-curable systems, silicones, acrylics, and hybrid technologies, to deliver innovative solutions and speed-to-market support for the Electronics market.
The R&D Manager will acquire and maintain a deep understanding of the target market, including market intelligence, trends, needs, and opportunities, while also having in-depth knowledge of the chemicals within the current product portfolio. The R&D Manager will independently operate the laboratory and its staff, recruit and develop the team, and direct activities within budget while prioritizing work and managing deadlines.
In addition to leadership responsibilities, the R&D Manager will remain hands-on in research and formulation work, ensuring direct involvement in critical projects while mentoring and developing the team’s technical capabilities. This role requires close cross-functional collaboration with sales, finance, quality, and manufacturing to successfully transition new products from R&D to market implementation within the company.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and develop objectives for the R&D team, providing mentorship, training, and technical guidance.
- Manage and oversee the full life cycle of R&D projects from conception to completion, ensuring technical soundness, resource efficiency, and timely execution.
- Design, develop, and improve new and existing products, incorporating customer feedback and industry trends.
- Ensure lab efficiency and cost-effectiveness, overseeing sample fulfillment, optimizing workflows, and maintaining safety and security protocols.
- Develop and maintain testing methods to assure product and process quality, establishing standards and confirming manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with sales, finance, quality, and manufacturing to successfully transition new products from R&D to market.
- Provide technical support to the sales team, assisting with customer inquiries, refining requirements, and strategizing product development.
- Maintain laboratory equipment by coordinating maintenance and repairs, ensuring compliance with manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols.
- Monitor industry trends and regulatory requirements, ensuring products and processes align with applicable standards while addressing risks and opportunities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and make timely decisions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening, group presentation, and effective collaboration.
- Proven leadership and management skills, including delegation, performance feedback, and team development.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Comprehensive industry knowledge, including competitive product chemistry, trends, and forecasts.
- Thorough understanding of applicable regulations, test methods, and R&D procedures.
- Attention to detail and data management skills to ensure accuracy and efficiency in lab activities.
- Ability to plan, direct, and oversee R&D projects, ensuring alignment with business goals and regulatory standards.
- Occasional travel required.
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred).
- 5-8 years of relevant industry experience, with 3-5 years in a senior technical role (Sr. Chemist or higher).
- Supervisory experience is required.
- Experience in Epoxy chemistry required.
- Experience in R&D, formulation, and reverse engineering preferred.
- Strong understanding of formulation, testing, and product approval processes.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Additionally, prolonged periods of standing and working at a lab bench.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred).
- 5-8 years of relevant industry experience, with 3-5 years in a senior technical role (Sr. Chemist or higher).
- Supervisory experience is required.
- Experience in Epoxy chemistry required.
