The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for manufacturing engineering project management, integration of electromechanical systems and controls functions of new and retrofitted industrial automation. Responsibilities include improving efficiency, productivity and quality of these automated systems as well as development and maintenance of BOM/MOM documentation in a controlled PLM/ERP system.
We are seeking candidates local to Billerica, MA only at this time.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- System Integration: Implement automated electromechanical systems, robots, pneumatics, servos, PLCs and vision systems for newly required automation or modify existing machinery to automate manufacturing processes. This will include knowledge of material handling, motion control, pneumatic and electrical controls and vision systems.
- Process Optimization: Analyze existing manufacturing processes to identify areas for optimization of throughput and quality. Develop and implement solutions to improve productivity and reduce waste.
- Develop machine and manning timing plans for new production equipment and processes as it relates to factory throughput.
- Apply latest technological advancements in support of continuous improvement and lean initiatives.
- Programming and Configuration Management: Understand, debug, and modify software programs for automated equipment and control systems. This includes programming PLCs, HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), and other control devices.
- Development and maintenance of Bills of Materials, Methods of Manufacture and Work Instructions within an ERP environment will be required.
- Requirements Development: Develop robust and precise User Requirements Specifications to drive cost-effective, reliable automation and appropriate selection of automation suppliers.
- Directly interface with Automation Suppliers as a primary technical interface for alignment to URS, as well as helping to resolve technical challenges as they develop.
- Establish technical instructions, drawings, models, training documentation, preventative maintenance plans, and troubleshooting guides for newly established automated equipment/processes.
- Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Diagnose and resolve technical issues with automated equipment including electrical, mechanical and software programs related to motion, vision, robotics or related sub-systems. Develop and implement preventive maintenance procedures.
- Collaboration Requirements: Work with engineers to develop automation operational work instructions, alignment tools and procedures as well as PM programs.
- Coordinate with other engineering teams and manufacturing to ensure design intent and cost-effectiveness of production are achieved.
- Manage individual project budgets and schedules and routinely report progress.
- Oversee and participate in design reviews, research, installation, FAT, SAT and troubleshooting of equipment.
- Ability to create design feedback and improvement suggestions and brainstorm with other individuals and engineering disciplines.
- Adhere to good manufacturing and good documentation practices.
- Review, understand, and explain specifications and prints.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, EE, Automation, or Related Field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the design of automated equipment.
- Expert Knowledge in 3D CAD software.
- Ability to design and fabricate fixtures and automation elements for automation.
- Competence in PLC / HMI Programming, inclusive of ethernet and coms protocols.
- Ability to drive outside suppliers to produce fully functional automation at a reasonable cost while maintaining an aggressive timeline.
- Mechanically inclined, strong problem-solving skills, hands-on individual.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Additional Skills Required:
- Expertise in SolidWorks.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley and/or Mitsubishi PLC programming.
- Ability to analyze and resolve issues with complex PLC or software driven electromechanical systems utilizing root cause analysis tools.
- Strong understanding of automation technologies such as robotics, PLCs, sensors, and industrial control systems. Proficiency in programming ladder logic, C/C++, or Python.
- Ability to build and maintain BOM and MOM in PLM and ERP systems.
- Experience in automation maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience with GD&T ANSI Y14.5.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing and ergonomic principles.
- Familiar with 4-Axis robot programming.
- Familiar with machine vision design and programming.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- This work will be done in an office and on the manufacturing floor.
- Must be able to stand/work on your feet for several hours a day.
- Must be able to lift and manipulate 50 lbs. on a periodic basis.
- Must be willing and able to work on-site at our facilities in Billerica, MA.
