Waste Management Route Supervisor

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Waste Management Route Supervisor. Duties include:
- Assigns employees to specific crews
- Coordinate and implement the collection of refuse from assigned routes; supervise crews engaged in waste collection on assigned routes
- Inspects work in progress
- Inspects routes after collection; coordinates routes when vehicles are down
- Inspects vehicle to assure proper use by employees; operates waste management vehicles and equipment as needed
- Investigates accidents and incidents and implements corrective measures; reviews daily reports to ensure productivity by all operators; conducts safety briefings
- Writes work orders for special collection observed on routes
- Communicates with the public
- Administers disciplinary actions
- Ensures City policies and safety procedures are followed
- Must possess a valid Virginia Commercial driver's license
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
Minimum Requirements:
Minimums: High School or GED and five (5) years experience in waste management field activities, one (1) year in a supervisory capacity, or equivalent experience and training. Must possess a valid Virginia Commercial driver's license.
Special Requirements: May work hours in excess of normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Requires appropriate personal protective equipment in designated areas of risk. Subject to mandatory drug testing.
Preferences:
- Supervisory experience in waste collection
- Experience and knowledge of waste collection field activities
- Customer Service experience
- Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Knowledge of City policies relating to discipline
- Skill in planning and scheduling work of employees and equipment
- Skill in supervising difficult employees
- Skill in resolving citizen concerns
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others
- Ability to work in a diverse team
- Ability to adapt to new technology
- Ability to make good decisions
- Ability to prepare simple reports
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle, as well as, other waste management vehicles and equipment
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally with employees, upper management, and citizens
- Ability to make adjustments to collection routes as needed
