Summary

Job Description

The Special Education Floater is a substitute teacher who travels to different schools to cover special education classes as needed. This role involves creating a flexible instructional program and establishing a class environment that is conducive to learning and personal growth. The Floater builds effective rapport with students, motivating them to develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for a strong educational foundation, tailored to each student”s abilities. Additionally, the Floater fosters positive relationships with parents and other staff members.

Under the guidance of the Building Principal and the Director of Special Education, the Licensed Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction to students with disabilities, evaluates their progress, adheres to state-mandated procedures, and serves as the IEP Manager for assigned students.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Complies with the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession; upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives, regulations, GISD school board policies, as well as local, state and federal regulations.

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and computer security regulations.

Acts as a positive role model for students.

Instructs assigned classes and provides specialized instruction based on research to meet the instructional goals and objectives outlined in each student”s IEP.

Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the sources provided by the district.

Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon requests of immediate supervisor.

Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior established by administrators and teachers.

Strives to implement by instruction and action the philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives distributed by the district.

Takes reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Evaluate student progress regularly. Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.

Maintains records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.

Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.

Attends staff, departmental, and grade-level meetings.

Maintains professional relationships with staff and cooperates in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods.

Utilizes a range of teaching techniques, methods, and learning principles to help students achieve their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. Implements various instructional strategies and media that align with the physical constraints of the learning environment, as well as the needs and abilities of individual students or student groups.

Creates and executes annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students, outlining present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to achieve those goals.

Strives to establish and maintain open communication with each student and their parents regarding academic and behavioral progress and ensures availability when required or requested in advance under reasonable conditions.

Utilizes teaching techniques and classroom strategies to accommodate the various learning styles and modes of his/her students.

Tests students, records grades, and sends progress reports to parents, effectively and on time.

Works with principal, counselor, and supervisory staff in identifying and solving problems related to his/her students.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES:

Supervises students, instructional assistants, volunteers and student teachers when assigned.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree in teaching from an accredited institution in the appropriate special education area.
  • New Mexico Level II or Level III Teacher License
  • TESOL Endorsement or Bilingual Preferred

Supplemental Information

Technology Skills

  • Ability to use multiple virtual instructional platforms.
  • Proficient in Google Suites
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites
  • Experience with online meeting platforms such as Google Meets, Zoom, MS Teams
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished

in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other Skills And Abilities

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • New Mexico Level II or Level III Teacher License
  • TESOL Endorsement or Bilingual Preferred

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
