Brief Description

Job Objective: The Specialty Coordinator is responsible for the nursing care of patients undergoing surgical and/or other invasive procedures. The RN shall function under the guidelines of AORN Standards, as well as the policies and procedures of the Medical Center. The RN coordinates activities of the identified surgical cases within the specialty.

Essential Duties: Meets all essential duties of an Operating Room Registered Nurse.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Applies nursing process in direct patient care:
  • Responsible for creating a safe and comfortable environment for the surgical patient.
  • Ensures that patients have a safe intraoperative period from general, regional or local anesthesia.
  • Provide accurate and ongoing patient assessment.
  • Creation and maintenance of quality care provided for patients undergoing surgery.
  • Allows the patient to participate in his/her care and respect and carries out wishes accordingly (i.e. decision to decline blood transfusion, etc.).
  • Acts as patient advocate while patient is impaired either under general anesthesia, regional or sedation.
  • Accounts for soft goods, needles, instruments, sharps and miscellaneous items during intraoperative phase.
  • Assisting staff in preparing patients under service line.
  • Responsible for training and educating staff under service line in conjunction with the department Educator and Manager.

Skills and Abilities:

Skills

  • Knowledge and application of surgical asepsis and sterile technique.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of proper supplies, equipment and instrumentation needed during surgical procedures (i.e. electrocautery, patient monitoring equipment, and other equipment such as neurological, cardiovascular, and orthopedic).
  • Demonstrates competency in the use of the new technologies relating to equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to take charge of the unit for the assigned shift within two years from date of hire.
  • Facilitates education/growth of employees/students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to supervise care provided by others.
  • Adheres to accepted policy and procedure in providing patient care.

Coordinates

  • Coordinates service line specific to surgery staffing schedule and care teams.
  • Participate in Value Analysis Committee.
  • Coordinates activities with Central Service regarding the safe handling, cleaning and sterilization of instrumentation.
  • Order and maintain ancillary supplies related to Surgery.
  • Works with the OR Management to maintain and update OR/Medical Center Policies and protocols related to service-specific surgery.
  • Attends Surgery Committee and presents as needed.
  • Resource person for service line throughout hospital continuum.
  • Works in conjunction with specialty team and advises manager of product and equipment needs relevant to service line.

Technical

  • Coordinates routine preventive maintenance on specialty service-related instrumentation and equipment.
  • Working with staff, ensure that auxiliary equipment for specialty service Procedures (ESU, Bipolar, Gyrus, ACMI, Endostabilizer, etc.) is available and functional in room.
  • In-service Surgical Services staff on the intraoperative management of the specialty service.
  • Serve as an expert in their specialty.

Clinical

  • Clinical troubleshooting of the specialty service equipment and instrumentation during specialty procedures.
  • Maintains Physician preference cards for specialty
  • Participate in the preoperative clinical pathway of patients before surgical procedure.
  • Develops preoperative education for specialty service patients.
  • Assists OR team as required during specialty procedures.
  • Support new surgeons interested in specialty service.
  • Assist RN and OR Manager and Educator in developing and maintaining a Clinical Training Program for individual specialty surgical teams and affiliated hospital staff.

Other Duties

  • Serve as point person for specialty service-related questions.
  • Liaison between hospital, surgeons, marketing, and health care professionals.
  • Meets with new and visiting surgeons to promote service.
  • Knowledge of surgical technology, materials, and Surgical policies and procedures (sterile protocol, OR attire, etc.), and the fundamental methods relating to surgery.

Education and Experience:

Education

  • BSN Preferred

Experience

  • Must complete accredited Perioperative Nursing Course and Preceptor Program, and/or have two years of acute care operating room experience.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Meets all required licensure and/or certifications of a Registered Nurse
  • BCLS
  • BSN desirable
