Duties

As a Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring Technician (Biological Science Assistant) in Charleston, Oregon, you will assist the Shellfish Program / Harmful Algal Bloom Specialist with monitoring the spatial distribution, abundance, species composition, and condition of marine phytoplankton communities associated with Harmful Algal Blooms along the southern Oregon coast (Winchester Bay to Brookings). Duties include:

  • Collect routine seawater samples for analysis of HABs and characterize phytoplankton communities
  • Collect periodic samples of seawater and phytoplankton from nearshore marine waters and estuaries
  • Assist with stock assessment, creel surveys, and other ongoing shellfish management activities

These monitoring activities will contribute to an early warning system to determine when harmful algal blooms are present in Oregon’s marine waters, and help verify in advance that they are producing marine biotoxins that contaminate seafood and pose a risk to human health.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:

  • Monitoring and data collection experience
  • Data analysis experience
  • At-sea sampling experience
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Anyone who has or is in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences
