Overview

The Director, Distribution oversees the company’s third-party logistics (3PL) and internal warehousing, freight operations, and inventory management processes across the network. This role is responsible for implementing and optimizing logistics and inventory strategies to ensure cost efficiency, service reliability, and operational excellence. By leveraging technology, data analytics, and standardized processes, this role drives performance in 3PL partnerships, freight management, adherence to budgets, and inventory control while mitigating operational risks. The Director collaborates with cross-functional teams to support company objectives and deliver exceptional service to internal and external stakeholders.

What You'll Do

  • Implements logistics and inventory strategies for internal and 3PL warehousing across all sites, freight operations, and inventory management, aligning with departmental goals for cost, service, and efficiency.
  • Responsible for inventory control and accountability for raw material, components, and finished good inventory totaling over $35MM spanning 10+ company and 3PL locations
  • Leads and mentors a team of 35+ direct and indirect reports responsible for 3PL coordination, freight execution, and inventory management, fostering a culture of accountability and performance.
  • Manages the operational execution of all 3PL warehouse activities throughout network, ensuring compliance with service level agreements (SLAs), quality standards, and cost targets.
  • Oversees freight operations, including carrier coordination, route optimization, and cost management, to achieve timely deliveries at the lowest possible cost.
  • Designs and maintains efficient inventory management processes, including demand forecasting, stock replenishment, cycle counting, and obsolescence management, to optimize inventory levels and minimize carrying costs.
  • Utilizes warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation management systems (TMS), and ERP tools to enhance visibility, streamline operations, and improve decision-making in 3PL, freight, and inventory functions.
  • Monitors and reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) for 3PL performance, freight costs, inventory accuracy, and warehouse efficiency, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
  • Collaborates with 3PL providers and freight carriers to resolve operational issues, negotiate service agreements, and ensure alignment with company standards.
  • Drives continuous improvement initiatives, applying Lean or Six Sigma principles to optimize 3PL processes, reduce freight expenses, and improve inventory turnover.
  • Supports risk mitigation efforts by identifying and addressing potential disruptions in 3PL services, freight operations, or inventory availability, ensuring operational continuity.
  • Partners with procurement, operations, and sales teams to align logistics and inventory processes with supply chain demands and customer requirements.
  • Assists in developing and managing the budget for 3PL, freight, and inventory operations, ensuring cost control and adherence to financial targets.
  • Supports talent development by providing training, coaching, and performance feedback to team members, in collaboration with HR.

What You'll Leverage

  • Ability to implement and optimize, and maintain logistics and inventory processes, ensuring cost efficiency, service reliability, and compliance with company standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) to enhance operational efficiency and reporting.
  • Proficiency in data analysis (e.g., using analytics tools, Excel, or BI platforms) to monitor KPIs, identify performance gaps, and drive improvements in 3PL, freight, and inventory operations.
  • Expertise in continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) to streamline processes, reduce waste, and improve cost and service outcomes.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a team of logistics and inventory professionals, fostering accountability and professional development.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills to manage 3PL providers, freight carriers, and internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment with operational goals.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., procurement, operations, sales) and report performance to senior leadership.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate operational risks in 3PL services, freight operations, and inventory processes, ensuring continuity and resilience.
  • Familiarity with incorporating ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) practices, such as fuel-efficient freight routing or green warehousing, to support corporate sustainability goals.
  • Experience managing operational budgets for logistics and inventory functions, with a focus on cost control and adherence to financial targets.

What You'll Need

  • Accredited 4 year college degree in Supply Chain, Business Management, Finance or other related fields or related experience
  • 12-14 years of progressive experience as a mid-level manager in MRO, Procurement or related fields with at least 7-10 years in a supervisory or managerial role overseeing 3PL warehousing, freight operations or inventory management across multiple sites
  • Strong background in inventory management processes, including stock replenishment, cycle counting, and obsolescence control, with experience reducing carrying costs or improving turnover rates
  • Experience working for CPG or Food & Beverage manufacturing environment a plus
