The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving company-wide environmental, health, and safety programs across cultivation, manufacturing, and retail operations. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local EHS regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, state agriculture, and cannabis regulatory agencies. The EHS Manager serves as a subject matter expert and strategic partner to operations, engineering, security, quality, and leadership teams, driving a strong safety culture, risk reduction, and regulatory readiness across all facilities. Some evening, night, weekend or on-call work may be required.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS management systems for cultivation, manufacturing, and retail environments.
  • Establish standardized EHS policies, SOPs, and best practices across all states and facilities while accounting for state-specific regulatory differences.
  • Lead site-level and cross-functional safety steering committees and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Partner with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Security, and HR to embed EHS requirements into facility design, equipment selection, and operational processes.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, including OSHA/MOSH, EPA, DOT, state Departments of Agriculture, fire codes, and cannabis regulatory authorities.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for EHS-related inspections, audits, and regulatory inquiries.
  • Track regulatory changes and proactively update programs, training, and documentation.
  • Support licensing, renewals, and regulatory reporting requirements related to safety and environmental compliance.
  • Conduct job hazard analyses, facility risk assessments, and ergonomic evaluations to reduce workplace injuries and operational risk.
  • Lead incident investigations, near-miss reporting, and root cause analysis; implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Track and analyze EHS metrics (injury rates, incident trends, training completion, audit findings) and report to leadership.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs, including but not limited to:
    • Lockout/Tagout
    • Fall protection and ladder safety
    • Respiratory protection and PPE
    • Chemical handling and hazard communication
    • Emergency response and evacuation
    • Ergonomics and safe work practices
  • Foster a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, leadership coaching, and accountability.
  • Manage chemical inventory, labeling, SDS systems, storage, and disposal in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including cannabis green waste, non-conforming material, and disposal documentation.
  • Support environmental programs such as sanitation, environmental monitoring, and swabbing in coordination with Quality and Operations teams.
  • Ensure proper handling, inspection, and documentation of incoming materials related to safety and environmental requirements.
  • Develop and manage contractor safety programs, including prequalification, onboarding, and on-site compliance.
  • Ensure vendors and contractors adhere to company safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with Security and Facilities to develop and maintain emergency response, evacuation, and crisis management plans.
  • Ensure compliance with fire protection, fire prevention, and life safety codes.
  • Coordinate drills and emergency response training across sites.

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA/MOSH, EPA, DOT, and state environmental and safety regulations.
  • Experience developing and implementing EHS programs and training from the ground up.
  • Familiarity with cGMP or regulated manufacturing environments (food, pharma, or cannabis preferred).
  • Chemical management and hazardous materials experience.
  • Strong audit, investigation, and root cause analysis skills.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to balance compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving regulatory environment.
  • Excellent communication and influence skills across all organizational levels
  • This role will require 25% travel.

Supervisory Responsibilities

No direct reports. Provides functional leadership, training, and guidance to site safety champions, supervisors and cross-functional teams.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 4-7 years of progressive EHS experience in manufacturing, processing, food, pharmaceutical, chemical, or regulated industries.
  • Experience supporting multi-site or multi-state operations strongly preferred.

Licenses/Certifications (Preferred)

  • CSP, ASP, CHMM, or similar safety/environmental certification
  • OSHA 30-hour certification
  • National Safety Council or equivalent safety training credentials
