As an international leader in developing and perfecting ventricular assist devices (VADs), our team is unrivaled in the mid-Atlantic region for our scope of services, quality of care, and patient outcomes As a Ventricular Assist Device Nurse Coordinator, you will work in conjunction with the surgical physician director to coordinate the VAD program at Washington Hospital Center. Our VAD Coordinators oversee all non-IABP device training, implantation, management, and outpatient care, work with our physicians in managing VAD databases, and coordinate all VAD-related clinical trials If you meet the qualifications and are looking for PRN this could be the perfect opportunity for you!! Education:Bachelors degree in Nursing is required.Experience:Approximately three to four years of nursing care in a tertiary facility, with ideally heart failure and ventricular assist device experiences in either a step-down or ICU setting. Experience in conducting clinical research trials is desirable.Certification/Registration/Licensure:Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia is required as is BCLS certification Primary Duties and Responsibilities • Oversees, evaluates and directs activities related to managing all non-IABP VADs • Assures adherence to standards set by JCAHO and other regulatory bodies • In conjunction with Surgical Director, implements and assures adherence to current clinical standards for VAD supported patients • In conjunction with the Surgical Director, evaluates, formulates and implements departmental administrative policies and procedures • Assists with surgical implantation or exchange of non-IABP ventricular assist devices • Works with Clinical Supply in the OR to maintain device inventory • In conjunction with Heart Failure Cardiologist, participates in outpatient clinic evaluations of patients supported with a ventricular assist device, including VAD data collection, limited physical exam, and driveline evaluations • Documents and maintains records/charts, and reports patient's condition to appropriate personnel. Records progress notes at appropriate intervals in patient's hospital chart and office chart • Manages all aspects of investigational/clinical trials related to ventricular assist devices, to include but not limited to, obtaining research consents, scheduling or coordinating device or protocol related tests and procedures, data collection and submissions, IRB communication and submissions, site audits by sponsors, etc • Working with the clinical managers and industry clinicians, provides extensive training to all hospital personnel who will be involved in managing the patient care (e.g., MedSTAR, PT/OT, ICU and floor nurses and intensivists, perfusionists, etc.) • Works with team to develop order sets, nursing flowsheets and reference charts for VAD patients and clinical staff • In conjunction with physicians, manages VAD databases and actively participates in the development of oral presentations and manuscripts regarding the VADs • Evaluates patients and family's educational needs, and develops/implements appropriate teaching programs for patients and families. Provides extensive training and certification of patients and families and/or friends on devices with which patients will be discharged • Serves as the primary contact person to interface with industry personnel on behalf of the institution and physicians • Establishes, maintains, and participates in the VAD call schedule • Maintains professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, etc. and through reading appropriate scientific literature Minimum Qualifications Education • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required Experience • 3-4 years of nursing care in a tertiary facility, with ideally heart failure and ventricular assist device experiences in either a step-down or ICU setting required • Experience in conducting clinical research trials preferred Licenses and Certifications • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required • BLS - Basic Life Support required Why MedStar Health?
