Job Description

Purpose:

The Assistant Director of Academic Advising for Engineering Advising Services reports to the Director of Academic Advising and provides oversight of engineering advising services teams and programs. Coordinates college level programming like new student conferences, the relevant testing process for new students, and academic advisor training and development. Serves on university committees and provides leadership to college committees, projects, and initiatives. Additionally, the Assistant Director works with the Director of Academic Advising, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, and the Assistant Dean for Student Success on special projects, academic policy development, and implementation of programs that directly relate to increasing retention and graduation rates for students in the College of Engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports oversight of engineering advising services teams at the following locations: Engineering at College Station, Engineering at Galveston, Engineering at the Higher Education Center at McAllen, Engineering at Blinn, and the Texas A&M Engineering Academy Sites.
  • Advises students as assigned, and advises students in target populations to include university suspension, college dismissal, department dismissal, or low mid-term grades, etc.
  • Oversees the coordination of new student conferences, scholastic probation and dismissal, and coordinates the college and university level reports and appeals.
  • Trains advising staff on college and university resources; oversees advising staff on the referral process; serves as a college liaison to external agencies to bring advising issues to their attention; serves on college and university committees to establish and maintain relationships with external agencies; leads learning communities and develops programs for at-risk students.
  • Works with the Director of Engineering Advising Services, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, and the Assistant Dean for Student Success on special projects, academic policy development, and implementation of programs that directly relate to increasing retention and graduation rates for students in the College of Engineering
  • Directs the development of technology and implementation of new advising-related technology products.
  • Uses mastery of advising principles and degree programs in the hiring and training of academic advising staff; creates and provides academic advising programs, processes, and services. Coordinates services for students from a wide-range of academic circumstances. Provides faculty, deans, and directors with reports on student, curricular, and process issues.
  • Provides professional development activities for advising staff. Contributes to the advising profession at the local, state, and national level.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What we need:

  • Master's degree or above in education, counseling, or STEM field.
  • Six years of related experience.

What is helpful:

  • Experience in management (includes experience with advising, academic programs or support programs, and supervising full-time professional staff).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree evaluations.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
