This position has the ability to be a hybrid position for up to 50% of the pay period. The selected candidate is expected to work a minimum of the first two weeks in the office to assist in learning the position.

This position is responsible for developing external communication materials and campaigns that help achieve department priorities and advance favorable external attitudes toward the department. This position will prepare and distribute press releases, fact sheets, reports, presentations and other external communications for the media, external stakeholders, and the general public. This position will respond professionally on behalf of the department to inquiries from the general public. This position serves as the department’s social media coordinator and is responsible for maintaining and updating the department’s social media accounts. The position may be required to attend external events across the state to act as photographer, or to interview event participants for external communications. This position will be responsible for using a variety of technology, including GovDelivery and Sitecore, to disseminate external communications. This position may provide assistance to the director of the Public Information Office to prepare speeches and talking points for external events or to coordinate media visits to facilities. This position may provide backup and collaborative support to other PIO office employees.

Required Education And Experience

Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, broadcasting, telecommunications, advertising, communication arts, public relations or a related field.

Experience

Communications Representative 9

No specific type or amount is required.

Communications Representative 10

One year of professional experience in preparing and disseminating informational and promotional materials equivalent to a Communications Representative 9.

Communications Representative P11

Two years of professional experience in preparing and disseminating informational and promotional materials equivalent to a Communications Representative, including one year equivalent to a Communications Representative 10.

Alternate Education And Experience

Alternative Education and Experience

Communications Representative 9

Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major with two years of experience equivalent to a Communications Representative may be substituted for the education requirement.

OR

Completion of 60 semester (90 term) credits including 16 semester (24 term) credits in any combination of coursework in the following areas: English, journalism, communications, broadcasting, telecommunications, advertising, communication arts, marketing, or public relations, AND two years of experience equivalent to a Communications Representative may be substituted for the education requirement.

OR

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and four years of experience equivalent to a Communications Representative may be substituted for the education requirement.

Additional Requirements And Information

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
