The University of Southern Maine seeks applicants for a part-time (20 hours/week) position as an ESOL Instructor and Program Assistant for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program on the Portland campus.

The ESOL Program Assistant (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uHFYxMW-mxEk-yWgdWVkzdf2DzNoLuh3/view?usp=sharing) will teach in the ESOL Program and assist the program director. The Program Assistant teaches one course each semester (fall, spring, and summer), assists with administration of the program, responds to inquiries, and provides program information to walk-in prospective students. Other responsibilities include maintaining the program webpages, updating social media and promoting its use, and overseeing placement assessments and the relevant data. In addition, the Program Assistant conducts outreach to faculty departments and community partners to promote courses and to suggest resources as needed, The Program Assistant participates in relevant committees and collaborative cross-department groups, presentations, and workshops.

This is a part-time position on our Portland Campus with an annual salary up to $22,000.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in TESOL and/or relevant field, and/or Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language.
  • At least five years' experience teaching composition and English for Speakers of Other Languages at at least a secondary school level, including at least two semesters as instructor of record in a higher education setting in ESOL and/or composition.
  • Strong understanding of higher education academic writing standards and analysis.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Expertise in adult and higher education ESOL pedagogy, academic writing, reading comprehension, and grammar and editing instructional methods.
  • Experience with website content development and maintenance and social media content creation and administration.
  • Experience teaching with Brightspace, or other online learning management system, Google Suite, and other educational technology and social media tools.
  • Experience working in culturally, educationally, and linguistically diverse settings.

License/Certifications

  • Valid Maine motor vehicle's license

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Greater Portland's refugee and immigrant population.
  • Certification in TESOL, ELL Teaching, or CELTA.
  • Experience with learning a second language.
