Summary

The Reliability Engineer (GBS) is responsible for leading Machine Reliability improvements for assigned areas within a manufacturing setting by focusing on improving uptime and reliability to meet increased demand. The right candidate will successfully utilize GAF Business Systems (GBS) to support the integration of continuous improvement in plant operations.



The Reliability Engineer supports the production of high quality commercial roofing products, with a sense of urgency and accountability for equipment uptime. This employee thrives in environments where safety, quality, service and cost are the highest priorities and is able to make recommendations to improve the overall performance of plant equipment. The Reliability Engineer will interact and communicate effectively with all GAF employees with a positive, customer focused attitude. Developing strong relationships with production operators and other staff is critical.





This position reports directly to the Plant Manager with a dotted line to the Sr. Director GAF Business Systems. The ideal candidate will have some lean and/or six sigma background with the ability to coach, train and drive these projects within the plant.



Essential Duties

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to include predictive and preventive maintenance activities in mechanical and electrical systems (vibration analysis, lubrication oil analysis, motor circuit evaluation, corrosion monitoring, thermography, equipment laser alignment, etc.)
  • Analyze rotating equipment, piping systems, electrical systems, and instrumentation systems for failures and provide solutions to eliminate or extend the time between failures.
  • Conduct and or lead breakdown analysis investigations, perform failure analysis, Fishbone analysis and focused improvement activities.
  • Liaison with other groups and plant personnel to instruct and or support Root Cause Analysis as a focused improvement strategy.
  • Work closely with maintenance and production technicians to improve techniques that adversely affect equipment or product quality.
  • Work closely with project engineers and or plant personnel to establish and enhance design standards that minimize life cycle costs and support high reliability.
  • Identify skill improvement opportunities and new tools/techniques to improve operating and maintenance results.
  • Standardize Preventative Work Instructions to maximize the maintenance department’s productivity while minimizing wasted time and controlling cost.
  • Review engineering specifications and drawings, propose design modifications to improve reliability within cost and business requirements.
  • Monitor equipment performance, identify opportunities for equipment or product improvement.
  • This is a change agent role meaning it is accountable for achieving results by implementing lean manufacturing methods through influence, facilitation, coaching, and mentoring the production and support teams (without any direct authority)
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement by engaging people in improving the business. Developing the site team through hands-on improvement projects combined with relevant training in all manufacturing, support, and administrative functions
  • Measure and report progress to the site team and Plant Manager. Ensuring that improvement projects and training are consistent with GAF Business Systems standards and sustained over time


Physical Demands
  • Ability to read and concentrate via computer data entry typing and proofreading
  • Must be able to climb ladders and/or stairs and walk on open grating on elevated surfaces
  • Required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch
  • Frequent sitting, walking and standing; occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and balancing
  • Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling the use of office machinery
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Frequent use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of manufacturing equipment and machinery
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds


Under This Roof, We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required; experience in maintenance and reliability tracking is preferred
  • Self-motivated, responsible, enthusiastic, trustworthy and a positive attitude


Under This Roof, We Also Value
  • Ability to use a CMMS (Maximo preferred) and Basic proficiency in Google Suite, including email and shared drives
  • Experience in Lean Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, prioritize, and execute plans to deliver results on multiple projects and tasks to achieve critical operating objectives
  • Small capital project management skills
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment, hydraulics, pneumatics, bearings, lubrication, vibration analysis, thermal imaging, oil analysis, non-destructive testing, and laser alignment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead through the influence of non-reports
  • Flexible, patient and open-minded; willingness to seek assistance and collaborate with others
