Description

Our Senior Assistant City Attorney provides legal representation and advice to the City, City Council, City boards and commissions, and City staff; and performs other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the City Attorney. This position primarily supports Power and Telecommunications.

The pay range for this position is $146,823 to $212,893 annually, with a hiring range of $146,823 to $179,858 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

  • Performs supervisory functions with the City Attorney's Office.
  • May attend City Council meetings and City management team meetings for the City Attorney as needed.
  • Manages the City Attorney's Office in the absence of the City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney.
  • Provides guidance and oversight of legal work within the City Attorney's office and work of outside legal counsel.
  • Provides legal advice and guidance to intergovernmental boards and commissions as well as attends meetings as assigned
  • Interprets federal, state and local laws, rulings and regulations
  • Provides legal advice to City departments and officials
  • Prepares contracts, ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents
  • Reviews City contracts and other legal documents for legal sufficiency and potential legal implications
  • Identifies potential and actual legal issues raised by City policies and practices, and recommends actions to address such issues
  • Represents the City in negotiations
  • Performs professional legal work carrying the highest levels of volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy and responsibility
  • Performs legal research, discovery and trial work, write briefs, motions, memorandum and opinions of law for the City Attorney, City staff
  • Keeps the City Attorney informed of matters being handled as required
  • Assists in training or advising other attorneys in the office and office support staff
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs such other duties as are assigned or required by the City Attorney

SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Supervises attorneys and office support staff as assigned.

  • Specific knowledge of municipal law, other local government law, real property law, land use law, employment law, utility law or similar areas relevant to a municipal practice

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to use word processing and presentation software, and to do on-line legal research
  • Ability to work independently in protecting the legal interests of the City and in supporting the goals and objectives of the City Council, City Manager and City Attorney
  • Ability to perform with integrity; demonstrate honesty and sensitivity to ethical issues; and avoid actual or apparent impropriety and/or conflicts of interest
  • Exercise appropriate judgment, often under pressure, consistent with the highest levels of volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy and responsibility attending the position
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and officials, co-workers and the public, and deal with problems timely, effectively, courteously and tactfully
  • Ability to effectively supervise and manage employees

Education and/or experience: A law degree from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school is required. A minimum of seven years of experience required in municipal law, land use, real estate, sales and use tax, elections, civil litigation and/or other local government. Experience must include a minimum of three years in municipal law.

Licensing/Certification And Other Requirements

  • Must be licensed to actively practice law in the State of Colorado and be in good standing with the Colorado Supreme Court.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Material and equipment directly used: Telephone, copier, fax machine, personal computer, and computer-based programs including Westlaw, Microsoft Outlook and Word are among the machines and software used to perform the job.

Working conditions and physical requirements: Will perform the job functions primarily in an office environment which may require long periods of sitting. Travel by car to and from meetings may be necessary. Requires much mental effort, study and concentration, and often under pressure of time and adverse consequences of error or failure. Working early morning, evening, holiday and weekend hours is sometimes required. Regularly required to talk and hear and the demands on the visual senses are very high. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and required to reach with hands and arms. Must occasionally move and/or position up to 10 pounds.

Hybrid Remote Work Eligibility: This position may be eligible for up to two days per week working remotely. Probationary employees (within the first six months of employment) may not be eligible. Subject to change based on business needs and performance expectations.
