Fiber Design Engineer (Remote)

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Fiber Design Engineer with expertise in Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network design, including XG-PON, GPON, and split network configurations. The ideal candidate will be proficient in using industry-standard design tools such as 3GIS, ArcGIS, and Vetro Fiber Map, and will have hands-on experience with AutoCAD and KMZ files. This role requires a strong understanding of fiber optic network architecture, from high-level design to detailed engineering, with a focus on scalability, efficiency, and future-proofing.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and Planning:
• Develop detailed designs for FTTH networks, including XG-PON and GPON architectures, with a focus on split network configurations.
• Design fiber routes and determine optimal fiber counts, ensuring alignment with project specifications and scalability requirements.
• Plan and document hand hole locations and ensure proper placement for ease of access and future maintenance.
• Identify and document the location of splitter enclosures, ensuring they are optimally positioned for efficient signal distribution.
• Utilize 3GIS, ArcGIS, and Vetro Fiber Map software for planning, design, and documentation of fiber network routes.
• Create and modify design plans in AutoCAD, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards and project specifications.
• Generate KMZ files to map and document fiber routes and placements for field use and client review.
• Network Equipment and Optimization:
• Select and specify appropriate fiber equipment, such as optical splitters, Optical Line Terminals (OLTs), and network distribution cabinets.
• Optimize fiber layouts and equipment placements for efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and future scalability.
• Ensure fiber counts are accurate and properly assigned throughout the network for seamless operation and future expansion.
• Collaborate with project managers and construction teams to ensure designs meet the physical requirements and are feasible for deployment.
• Data Management & Reporting:
• Maintain accurate records of design changes, fiber equipment specifications, and project milestones.
• Prepare and deliver design packages, including diagrams, schematics, and cost estimates, to clients and internal teams.
• Collaboration & Coordination:
• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including construction, field operations, and project management, to ensure designs align with project goals and timelines.
• Interface with clients to understand their requirements, provide design updates, and address any concerns or modifications needed.

Qualifications:

• Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Experience:
• 3+ years of experience in fiber network design, specifically for FTTH projects, including XG-PON, GPON, and split networks.
• Proficient in design software such as 3GIS, ArcGIS, and Vetro Fiber Map.
• Strong experience with AutoCAD and KMZ file generation for fiber network documentation.
• Solid understanding of fiber optic principles, construction practices, and network architecture, with specific expertise in fiber counts, splitter locations, and hand hole placement.
• Skills:
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
