Job Summary
We are seeking a talented and creative Art Director to join our growing team. You will play a pivotal role in creating a visually engaging experience for our audience across all platforms, including our website, email newsletters, social media, and print publication. You will help bring our daily news, opinion, advice stories, and special projects to life with compelling visuals. You will also manage a group of contractors that can carry out various design, photo, and production work.
It's an exciting time to join our team. This is a new position that is part of our transition to becoming an independent nonprofit. We are currently looking to launch new editorial projects and products. We also plan to work with an outside agency to rebrand the organization.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate with editors, journalists, and freelance designers and photo editors to create compelling visuals that support and enhance our journalism.
- Design layouts for the website, ensuring a user-friendly and visually appealing storytelling experience.
- Create and commission high-quality visuals, including photos, illustrations, animations, infographics, and multimedia assets.
- Cultivate a diverse network of visual artists and contributors.
- Manage the budget for photography, illustrations, and other creative assets.
- Oversee layouts for the print publication, in collaboration with a freelance designer.
- Stay up-to-date on design trends and best practices in online and print media.
- Consult with our business, professional and career insights, and development teams on marketing materials, reports, and other key projects.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as an Art Director or a similar design leadership role.
- An outstanding eye for visual storytelling and the demonstrated ability to deploy photography, illustration and other design elements for online journalism.
- A desire to experiment with fresh formats and ways of telling stories.
- Strong understanding of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design principles.
- Excellent knowledge of typography, layout, and color theory.
- Proficiency in design software such as the Adobe Creative suite, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator. Premiere, After Effects, or Canva a plus.
- Experience with content management systems.
- Experience managing a small team of contractors, with the potential to eventually manage full-time staff.
- A passion for journalism and a strong understanding of our mission.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and time management skills.
- Ability to be deadline-oriented and flexible as project timelines shift.
- A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Firsthand experience with data visualization and infographic creation, with tools such as Flourish and Datawrapper.
- Knowledge of social media design best practices.
- Wire and archival photo research skills, familiarity with copyright permissions and licensing rights
The expected salary range for this position is $90,000-$110,000 annually
The Chronicle of Philanthropy offers a generous benefits package including:
- 24 vacation days and 16 paid holidays annually, including the entire last week of December
- Up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave, 16 weeks of paid medical leave, and 2 weeks of paid family leave
