Description Of Job
About the Work Unit
The purpose of this position is to assist the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Investigations Unit(s) with analytical tasks related to criminal investigations for both internal and external customers. The current vacancy is within the Special Investigations Illicit Marijuana (SIIM) unit.
This position exists to collect, evaluate, collate, and analyze criminal and intelligence information which includes the use of charting techniques, time lines and telephone toll analysis, search warrant return analysis all used to develop a hypothesis or inference for investigations. Computer research must be conducted with the use of both open source databases as well as those that contain sensitive criminal justice information. This includes access to various public and criminal justice databases where they will obtain information to help create documentation to assist with case organization, investigative support, identify possible suspects, witnesses and persons of interest and their whereabouts, and prosecution. Data will be collected from various databases and then applied to specific analytical software to produce timelines and link charts. All of this helps to create a bigger picture of those involved in the crime and provides information to help ensure officer safety and successful prosecution. Analysts will also reach out to other organizations to obtain information to help to support the criminal investigation. This may include contacting other law enforcement agencies for additional information. Once the research is complete, analysis and inductive logic are used to determine which operation activities and procedures are required for each situation and request.
This analyst will also interpret and advise Investigators/Analysts nationwide in the assessment and appropriate disposition of criminal activity, arrest, intelligence, and fugitive reports and Colorado court disposition. Additionally, the analyst will assist outside agencies with interpreting criminal intelligence information related to criminal investigations which includes applying the principles and theories relating to criminal intelligence analysis and by performing a series of operational procedures leading to the most valid inference possible. This includes the standard law enforcement support packet of a victim, suspect, witness, or person of interest in a criminal investigation as well as analysis of criminal and intelligence information which includes but is not limited to the use of charting techniques, time lines, telephone toll analysis, and search warrant return analysis. This work will be completed on both recent incoming cases as well those cases in which CBI has been requested by local, state, and federal law enforcement to assist.
The customer base for analysis includes all law enforcement agencies, local, state, tribal and federal in Colorado. This analyst works closely with local jurisdictions and federal law enforcement to provide investigative assistance possibly when Agents of the CBI are not involved in the case.
The position is responsible for determining which databases and information to search to locate information that meets their needs and other information that will support their investigation or concerns. This may include developing an alert bulletin or a bulletin to assist in collecting information that is sent to specific partners.
This position will work specifically on investigative cases and carry a case load that includes but is not limited to major crimes, illicit marijuana, human trafficking, identity theft, cybercrime, and fugitive apprehension. This position requires the analyst to have the skills, knowledge, and training to work independently when necessary.
About The Job
The purpose of this position is to serve as the Investigative Analyst for Investigations. The position accesses and analyzes information gathered from both open and law enforcement sensitive databases. This information is then provided to the investigative entity whether it be CBI Agents or other local, state, federal agencies in Colorado or elsewhere as the case specifics deem.
