Western Tidewater CSB is seeking an Overnight Building Supervisor for a Crisis Receiving Center (The Haven).

Overnight Building Supervisor for a Crisis Program plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, security, and overall well-being of clients and staff during nighttime hours. This role typically requires a combination of administrative oversight, direct support for individuals in crisis, and facility management duties. Below are some of the key responsibilities and qualities that would be associated with this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervision & Support:
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of clients residing in the crisis program overnight.
  • Provide support and guidance to clients in crisis, which may involve de-escalation strategies and ensuring clients have access to any necessary resources (e.g., medical, mental health, or emergency support).
  • Assist clients with any immediate needs, such as medications, snacks, or access to quiet spaces for rest.
  • Monitoring and Safety:
  • Regularly patrol and monitor the facility to ensure safety protocols are followed, including emergency exits, fire alarms, and other safety equipment.
  • Observe client behavior, document incidents, and take appropriate action if any issues arise (e.g., escalations, health concerns).
  • Implement emergency response protocols in case of medical emergencies, security threats, or other crisis situations.
  • Maintain a visible, approachable presence in the building to deter potential safety concerns.
  • Communication:
  • Act as the point of contact for any issues that arise overnight, whether it’s from clients, staff, or outside authorities.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff members (e.g., daytime supervisors or managers) to ensure continuity of care and operations.
  • Document relevant incidents, client interactions, and other observations in the program’s reporting systems.
  • Facility Management:
  • Oversee the maintenance of the building overnight, ensuring that all common areas are clean, secure, and properly stocked.
  • Monitor and manage the physical condition of the facility, identifying any maintenance or repair issues and reporting them as necessary.
  • Ensure that clients are following building rules and guidelines, maintaining a calm and orderly environment.
  • Administrative Tasks:
  • Complete necessary reports on incidents, client status, and other relevant information.
  • Support the intake process for new clients during evening or overnight hours, including orientation and assessment as needed.
  • Manage any shift-specific paperwork, such as sign-in logs, inventory checks, or scheduling issues.
  • Crisis Management:
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and conflict resolution, utilizing knowledge of de-escalation techniques, trauma-informed care, and mental health first aid.
  • Ensure that clients are receiving proper care and are not at risk of harming themselves or others.
  • Coordinate with local emergency responders (e.g., EMTs, police) as needed in high-risk situations.

Qualities and Skills:

  • Strong Communication Skills: The ability to communicate clearly with clients in crisis, staff, and outside parties (e.g., emergency responders).
  • Crisis Management: Skilled in conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, and trauma-informed care.
  • Empathy and Patience: A deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals in crisis, paired with the ability to remain calm and compassionate under pressure.
  • Problem-Solving: The ability to think on your feet, make quick decisions, and manage unexpected situations effectively.
  • Team-Oriented: While working independently overnight, it’s important to stay connected with daytime staff and other colleagues to ensure continuity of care and smooth handoffs.
  • Organizational Skills: Being able to manage paperwork, maintain logs, and ensure that the facility is in order without the immediate supervision of a daytime manager.
  • Physical Stamina: Overnight shifts can require long hours on your feet, and you may be responsible for walking the facility or responding to various needs throughout the night.
  • Cultural Competence: An understanding of diverse backgrounds and the ability to provide respectful, non-judgmental care to individuals from different walks of life.

Typical Work Schedule:

  • The overnight building supervisor will typically work from late evening to early morning (e.g., 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) to ensure coverage when other staff are off-duty. However, hours may vary based on the specific needs of the crisis program.

This role is integral to ensuring that individuals in crisis are supported and that the program operates smoothly outside of normal business hours. In addition to being highly responsible and reliable, a good overnight supervisor for a crisis program should be adaptable, compassionate, and calm under pressure.

Qualifications:

  • QMHP (preferred), or two years of experience working with SMI in a direct care setting
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Drug and Alcohol/ Mental Health experience
  • Must possess skills to communicate effectively and interact well with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle a crisis and react appropriately.
  • Flexibility and adaptable
