Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Archives Technician, you will:
- Provide written or oral "first-line" reference assistance and consultation, responding to all forms of inquiry concerning NARA's archival holdings, in original or surrogate format, by using complex finding aid systems and related archival sources, in both electronic and analog formats.
- Perform a variety of functions that support high-quality reference services in research areas, including screening of records and redaction of information and materials under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exemptions.
- Assist researchers in navigating complex finding aid systems and establishing connections between related archival sources, regardless of their physical location.
- Perform research within the holdings for materials relating to a specific theme; research may be used for an on-line posting, special event, museum exhibit, or loan to other museums.

- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
- If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
- Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
- Designated and/or Random Drug Testing may be required.
- The work is mostly sedentary, however the incumbentmust be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending and lifting.
