Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the State Archaeologist, the Site Files manager shall manage the South Carolina State Site Files Program, pursuant to SC Code of Laws 60-13-210. This includes site form data intake, quality control, assignment of state site numbers, interface with Archsite, resolving data conflicts, and assisting SCIAA staff and external users with any issues. Implement strategic planning and grant writing. Serves as an intermediary with the state’s professional archaeological community for the site files program and its data.

Job Related Minimum Required Education And Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree and 2 or more years of experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in geography, library and information science, or anthropology with with at least one year experience in database management and GIS, experience managing large-scale archaeological data, and at least 1 year of archaeological field experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

The position requires an in-depth knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, relational databases, the management of big digital data, and site file management, as well as a sound understanding of South Carolina’s professional archaeological standards. Good communication skills are essential.

Job Duties

Job Duty

Manage the state-mandated South Carolina State Archaeological Site files program, including strategic planning, grant writing, and serving as an interface with the state’s professional archaeological community for the site files program and its data.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 30 Job Duty

Maintain a digital intake system for capturing site form data. Create and maintain a form and relational database that allows users to input site file data remotely, captured in a relational database whose data can be uploaded to ArchSite.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty

Conduct an accuracy check on all site form information, confer with site form submitter to address any problems, assign official site numbers, upload the site file to ArchSite and file a paper copy in the physical site files at SCIAA.

Resolve problems with legacy site forms and integrate the data into ArchSite. When practical, work in cooperation with the ArchSite System Administrator to update ArchSite with revisits and revised legacy site forms, and, if necessary, coordinate with site form submitters to address missing or incorrect data.

Maintain the SC Archaeology Bibliography. Ensure newly submitted reports are scanned and copies uploaded to ArchSite and shared with the SCIAA Curator. When possible, scan, upload, and share legacy reports.

Contributes to the overall success of the College of Arts and Sciences by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Supervisor.
