Description of Work Unit The Department of Computer Science has 1100 undergraduate majors and 279 graduate students in our Masters and Ph.D. programs as of Fall 2023. The department increased its number of under graduate women studying CS by 126% and increased its number of graduate women studying CS by 104% between 2018 and 2022, supported by a Northeastern Center for Inclusive Computing best practices grant. The department’s 21 tenure-track faculty are strong in research programs in algorithms, artificial intelligence, big data, bioinformatics, computer vision, distributed systems, networks, parallel computing, security, and software engineering. It has 11 non-tenure track faculty members who assist with the department’s teaching mission and 14 staff members who support overall teaching and research missions of the department. Position Summary The Department of Computer Science is seeking a dynamic and committed Academic Success Coordinator (ASC), formerly known as “student advisor”, who will play a significant role in promoting undergraduate student success. The ASC will work directly with students majoring in computer science (CS) and three CS minors. Please note this position is funded for two years. Subject to available funding, the department intends to continue the position after the initial funding expires. The Academic Success Coordinator, in collaboration with the department’s advising and mentoring team, department faculty, and ASC’s across campus, will provide academic guidance for students in ways that are both holistic and strategic and will contribute to the department’s ongoing initiatives to build a diverse and welcoming community of students, staff, and faculty. The primary functions of the ASC will be (1) to proactively advise computer science students from the time they arrive at new student orientation through graduation; and (2) to coordinate key undergraduate programs that will support recruitment and retention of a diverse and inclusive student body, providing students with an excellent undergraduate educational experience.
The Academic Success Coordinator will work closely with the advising and mentoring team and will report to the Lead Academic Success Coordinator.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement after a period of onboarding and training

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by start of the appointment.
- Two years of professional experience working with students in a high school or higher education setting.

Duty/Responsibility
- Assist with holistic advising during new freshmen and transfer student orientation.
- Participate in Ram Orientation.
- Develop and maintain ongoing advising/mentoring relationships with students beginning at freshmen/transfer orientation and continuing through graduation.
- Strategically and holistically advise computer science undergraduate students regarding majors/minors, curriculum matters, course offerings, degree plans, and progress towards degree completion. Assist with short-term and long-term planning, including career planning.
- Make referrals and connections to appropriate department and campus resources to promote student success.
- Provide major and career advice for CSU students seeking to change major to computer science. Establish on-going relationship with students who are in the process of changing majors through the major change and graduation.
- Participate in student recruitment efforts. Meet with and advise prospective students and their guests.
- Contribute to on-going development and teaching of the department’s First Year Seminar, particularly with respect to degree planning, careers, academic success, and major selection.
- Actively participate in the campus Academic Success Coordinator Network, including sharing best practices.
- Participate in campus-wide intervention strategies.
- Analyze data and produce reports on student success (e.g., admissions, retention/graduation, diversity). Use analysis to drive strategic initiatives and develop appropriate programs.

- Management of department’s undergraduate student employees including recruitment and management of undergraduate teaching assistants and helpers used in undergraduate courses, coordination and management of help desk staffed by undergraduate teaching assistants, and training for undergraduate teaching assistants.
- Management of undergraduate departmental policies such as academic integrity, class enrollments and capacities.
