Position Summary: The New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) is dedicated to providing NYC’s 1 million students with access to healthy food choices with the highest nutritional standards. OFNS has a critical impact on the overall education of students. With over 8,000 employees and an approximately $550 million budget, the organization has a significant influence on the national school food industry and the eating habits of future generations
In addition to day-to-day operations, OFNS is working on several initiatives that will add overall value to work performed and support high-level Chancellor and Mayoral initiatives
The Shared Learning Specialist will perform functions related to operational advancement and communications with a high degree of efficiency and customer service, assisting in the implementation of community development programs within OFNS. The selected candidate will monitor and evaluate various initiatives including but not limited to professional and culinary development of Cook Ambassadors, Cook Managers and School Food Service Managers who support not only the NYCPS, but New York City (NYC) at large. Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with Principals, School Administration, OFNS Administration, as well as the Kitchen Learning and Development Coordinator, Cook Ambassadors and Professional Development School Food Service Managers. There will also be a focus on building relationships with regional and central staff as well as outside supporters of healthy eating for NYC residents
Responsibilities
- Plans, implements, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates programs, i.e. the Cook Ambassador program, providing important community services through the Office of Food and Nutrition Services.
- Coordinates functions among community organizations leading toward successful rollouts of community-based programs to benefit NYC residents at large.
- Works collaboratively within the agency as well as other City agencies and other interested parties to secure the best outcomes.
- Performs difficult work in the preparation of planning documents and market research required for funding mayoral initiatives and community enrichment; ensures resource availability and allocation.
- Prepares evaluation reports and performs analyses related to the progress of programs.
- Works cross-functionally on a routine basis to provide the best outcomes regarding community and organizational needs.
- Assesses existing operational programs related to Kitchen Learning and Development and plans related to public food services as well as other factors of community and organizational importance.
- Assists with the rollout of major changes to school food services, including various operational Mayoral initiatives.
- Provides technical assistance and training to affected staff in program implementation and management including professional development workshops.
- Collaborates with OFNS staff and management regarding OFNS operational initiatives to ensure successful outcomes.
- Travels throughout the 5 boroughs to effectuate lasting, positive change for the communities of NYC.
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above
Preferred- Proficiency in data analysis.
- Excellent spoken and written communication and presentation skills.
- Excellent and effective data management and project planning.
- Ability to proactively identify key issues and risks to meet short and long-term goals.
- Highly motivated and self-directed, with a history of success.
Salary: $69,844 - $76,828
(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
