Summary:
Under the general direction of the Registered Nurse observes assigned patients and reports observations that may place the patient at risk for injury (intentional or unintentional harm) as well as changes in the patients cognitive and mental status. Assists in promoting a safe and caring patient environment.
Responsibilities:
- Observes patients activities and reports abnormal behavior actions (mood and mental status changes verbal and non-verbal) to a supervisor.
- Communicates with patients to provide social interaction.
- Assists in promoting a safe and caring patient environment.
- Observes patient rights.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Maintains patient privacy.
- Follows hospital policy and procedures regarding patient and staff safety practices.
Basic Knowledge:
- High School graduate or its equivalent preferred.
- Ability to converse and socialize with patient.
- Ability to follow instruction and observe safety precautions.
Experience:
- Previous experience as a volunteer preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Sitting for long periods of time.
- Works in a normal patient care environment.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases while in the presence of a patient; however chance of injury is minimized by the adherence to established infection control procedures.
