Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement was established in 2001 to develop citizen-leaders who serve UNC Greensboro and the larger Piedmont Triad community, and to advance the commitment of UNC Greensboro that every student will have the opportunity to engage in leadership development with public purpose. UNC Greensboro is a public, doctoral/research-intensive university of almost 20,000 students coming from North Carolina and 48 other states and 69 foreign countries/regions in 82 baccalaureate programs, 28 certificate/specialist/licensure programs, 74 master’s programs and 32 doctoral programs. UNC Greensboro is located in a city of 287,019 in the central part of the state, with a metropolitan area population of 1,089,155.
UNC Greensboro, located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, is 1 of only 40 doctoral institutions recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for both high research activity and community engagement. Position Summary
The Assistant Director for Leadership & Civic Engagement, who reports to the Director of the Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement, supports the vision for systematic leadership & civic engagement development across UNCG. The Assistant Director fosters internal and external relationships that lead to sustainable programs designed to enrich student leader development and build capacity for life-long civic engagement. The Assistant Director advances institutionalization of co-curricular processes and infrastructure for campus-wide leadership & civic engagement development within the mission of UNCG and consults frequently with other programmatic units throughout the university. The Assistant Director is expected to be well versed in current leadership, civic engagement and student development literature with the ability to advance scholarship within the field.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to Institutionalizing the UNCG’s Leadership & Civic Engagement Framework
  • Provides programming (design, implementation, and evaluation) for students to engage in a continuum of service opportunities ranging from entry level to advanced experiences of community engagement. This includes campus-wide days of service, both one-time and ongoing community projects, the student democracy fellows program, and awareness weeks.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director for Civic Engagement to maintain community partnership structures and celebrate quality partnerships through end of year event.
  • Builds collaborative service and leadership opportunities that strengthen community partnerships and the service mission of other internal campus units such as the Global Engagement Office, Lloyd International Honors College, Office of Undergraduate Studies targeted and scholarship programs (Learning Communities, UNCG Guarantee), and Office of Campus Activities and Programs.
  • Designs, updates, and facilitates effective use of the website, social media, and marketing materials.
  • Supervise Graduate Assistant for Leader Development.
  • Coordinate two campus-wide student leadership conferences or events annually.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director of Leadership to evaluate and assess leadership programming and offerings.
  • Provide administrative oversight of the Silver tier of the Spartan Leadership Challenge Program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in leadership development and/or higher education student development, or closely related field. Minimum of 2 years of experience required.
  • The successful candidate will exhibit a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • The candidate must have excellent oral, written, and project management skills as well as knowledge of leadership theory.
  • Training/facilitation experience is essential.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend programming is essential.
  • Ability to use multi-media strategies for programmatic teaching and administration required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred qualifications include the ability to create and deliver effective trainings and presentations for students, collaborate effectively with diverse populations, and communicate program goals to the members of the University community.
  • The successful candidate has extensive knowledge of leadership theory and demonstrates experience conceiving, planning, facilitating and evaluating experiential leadership programs for college students.
  • In addition, this position will need to inspire, motivate and support students, staff, and faculty in their efforts within leadership education to create positive social change.
  • Supervision experience a plus.
  • Ability to use multi-media strategies for programmatic teaching and administration required.
  • Ability to use graphic design software for marketing essential.
  • Ability to drive large passenger vans or mini bus a plus.
