Functions as a journey level Juvenile Detention Officer, providing direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility.
Detailed Description
Provides direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility to ensure their health, safety, and welfare within departmental policies and applicable standards. Provides individual and group counseling to promote personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives. Makes critical and sound judgements during crises in the absence of a supervisor, documents actions, and informs supervisors of encountered problems. Enforces facility rules, documents behavior, and communicates with appropriate personnel. Serves as back-up to staff, conducting tasks such as administering medications and processing intake assessments. Must physically perform “handling with care techniques” as outlined in Texas Juvenile Justice Department requirements. Conducts inspections, rounds, and drills including room checks and physical searches. Transports youths to appointments, coordinates, and provides daily educational and entertaining program activities. Performs other assigned duties.
Job Requirements
Education, Experience and Training: Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program and one year of related experience. Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively and maintain working relationships. Must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 90 days and be certified as required within six months of employment. Valid Texas driver's license and good driving record are required. Subject to extensive background investigations, drug testing, and shift changes. Working with juveniles requires tolerance for emotionally demanding environments. May involve mandatory overtime or double shifts. Must be at least 21 years of age and pass all required portions of the Juvenile Academy or standards related to PREA and Ethics. Physical/Environmental Requirements: Work inside a secured facility with potential exposure to diseases. Ability to restrain and/or chase youths. May involve using a vehicle to transport youths.
