About the Department
The mission of the SMU Police Department is to maintain a working partnership with all members of the Campus Community to preserve life, maintain human rights, protect property, and promote the educational objectives of Southern Methodist University. The department aims to create a secure and inclusive environment that supports the educational process.
About the Position
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
The Communications Officer is responsible for performing duties associated with the non-emergency and emergency response of the campus police department; it includes servicing calls and inquiries through incoming phone calls and radio transmissions, processing fire and security alarms, and personal contact with campus patrons. High standards of customer service are expected.
Essential Functions
- Answers emergency and non-emergency calls for service; monitors and processes calls from various sources, including phone lines and alarm systems.
- Maintains calm and manages incidents while handling incoming calls and radio; provides notifications to leadership during emergencies.
- Dispatches officers and works within a 24/7 police communications center.
- Transmits and receives radio calls; maintains effective communications with police and emergency services.
- Coordinates communications between field units and neighboring law enforcement agencies.
- Utilizes various telecommunications systems and equipment for emergency management.
- Maintains a high level of customer service; learns about University resources for effective communication.
- Works varied shifts and may include on-call duties and overtime during emergencies.
- Operates specialized communication terminals for law enforcement information access.
- Develops daily briefings for department leadership.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
A high school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree preferred. Minimum one year of experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience in high-stress service environments required; knowledge of police practices desired. Proficiency in Microsoft products and communication skills are essential.
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Sit for long periods of time.
