Job Description:
SUMMARY
Working under the direction of the Manager – Salomon Farm Park, Outdoor Recreation and Boating, the incumbent supervises and facilitates the Franke Park Day Camp program. The incumbent assumes the responsibility for the care, supervision, and instruction of groups of youth (4 to 17 years old), greets public, and answers questions. The incumbent assists the Manager – Salomon Farm, Outdoor Recreation and Boating with ideas and suggestions for program development and improvement. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Prepares and provides input for annual budget;
- Provides input for the short- and long-term planning of Franke Park Day Camp operations and areas;
- Designs informational brochures;
- Supervises daily cleaning of day camp facilities;
- Plans, organizes, and facilitates summer day camp program and all related events;
- Prepares food in compliance with Board of Health guidelines;
- Submit requisitions for employees;
- Submits requisitions for all printing needs;
- Designs, creates, and distributes awards for Advanced Camper program;
- Handles discipline of campers and employees;
- Creates and implements large group management plan;
- Interviews and hires staff;
- Performs inventory and orders supplies and equipment;
- Trains counselors (staff);
- Facilitates weekly staff meetings;
- Oversees daily operations;
- Answers questions, concerns, and complaints in a timely manner;
- Maintains attendance for weekly reports and/or emergencies and incidents;
- Disburses, collects, and completes employee time cards;
- Greets campers and parents;
- Assigns daily duties to staff;
- Handles emergencies and other problems;
- Writes work and/or repair requests;
- Supervises the division of campers into appropriate groups;
- Meets regularly with Day Camp Committee;
- Ensures a safe and enriching environment for all staff, participants, and guests;
- Regularly inspects facilities, trails, and other camp areas for safety and condition concerns and takes appropriate actions to address or remediate concerns.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Incumbent directs complex activities of one to two Camp Assistant Supervisors and approximately thirty (30) Camp Counselor – Franke Park Day Camp.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Completion of a four year college degree in education, environmental education, recreation or related field;
- Two years experience in recreation, education, outdoor education or a related field;
- Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES
- Possess knowledge of and/or willingness to learn principles of basic camping skills, nature education, and outdoor education and recreation;
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively while teaching various outdoor skills;
- Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with departmental managers, operating staff and the general public;
- Ability to understand moderately complex, relatively standardized tasks, processes, or operations;
- Ability to apply routine practices, rules, regulations, procedures, techniques, and/or traditions that are relevant to assigned tasks;
- Ability to hike or walk up to 3-5 miles per day over uneven terrain or unimproved trails;
- Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with supervisors, staff, and patrons.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Incumbent lends major contributions involving authoritative applications of Parks and Recreation Department policies and practices to especially complex matters. General objectives and boundaries are indicated. Problems during work causing questions about objectives and boundaries are discussed. Decisions and recommendations are reviewed for attainment of objectives and compliance with Parks and Recreation Department policy.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Duties require incumbent to be confident, assertive, very organized, orderly and have the ability to work well with people of all ages. Incumbent has contact with employees, public, participants/parents as well as persons, officials and representatives from various organizations. Incumbent’s work has a significant impact on programs and policies of the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department. Contacts are to render services by explanation, carry out policies and maintain coordination.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Valid Indiana Driver's License if City of Fort Wayne vehicle is used.
- Certified in American Heart Association’s Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Program;
- Certified as a ServSafe Food Manager.
