Director of Safety and Risk leads and supervises patient and employee safety, and risk management across the acute and ambulatory care spectrum. The Director of Safety and Risk will report to the Chief Medical Officer for safety functions and Vice President and General Counsel for risk management functions. In addition, the Director of Safety and Risk will work closely with the Chief Nursing Officer, organized medical staff, and other Department Directors.

Job Description:

  • Clinical Risk Management:
    • Develop and maintain oversight of active litigation, working with the VP and General Counsel and identified external legal resources
    • Identify and mitigate organizational risk through evaluation of safety events and annual risk assessment
    • Coordinate and oversee operations and assignment of outside counsel as needed
    • Identify gaps and create redundancies to ensure the system is a highly reliable organization
  • Patient and Employee Safety:
    • Develop and maintain a strong and standardized patient safety event response system improving system resiliency through prevention, detection and correction
    • Coordinate safety efforts to ensure Memorial Health is established as a learning organization and ensures a just culture and non-punitive response to errors while driving accountability
    • Administer Memorial’s patient safety reporting system and ensure appropriate investigation and follow through of safety events and reporting. Evaluate safety event trends and develop improvement tactics on a yearly basis
    • Investigate safety and risk events using appropriate methodologies to identify causes and help develop actions to mitigate further risk
    • Administer the daily safety huddle and work with appropriate operational leaders to follow and resolve safety issues
    • Develop and maintain standardized programming focused on prevention of safety events and continuous learning
    • Maintain the primary relationship with Memorial’s Patient Safety Organization
    • Administer the yearly Culture of Safety Survey and oversee action plan meeting identified goals and deadlines.
  • Medical Quality Review Committee:
    • Administer the Medical Staff Quality Review Committee to maintain records and minutes related to peer review, Ongoing and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s degree graduate from an accredited school of nursing, master’s degree in nursing, business, or healthcare administration
  • Certification: CPHRM
  • Experience: Ten (10) years in nursing and seven (7) years in leadership
