Position Summary:

The certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist will provide services to students identified with a visual impairment in Detroit Public Schools Community District and its catchment areas. Services will be provided in accordance with state and national standards, curriculum, and evidence-based practices. The specialist will instruct students in using their remaining senses to learn independent life skills, determine their position within the environment, and techniques for safe travel in various settings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited college or university.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP).
  • Exemplary attendance record.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities with or without accommodations.

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluate, plan, coordinate, and implement individualized programs of instruction in orientation and mobility for students with visual impairments, including those with multiple disabilities.
  • Participate in MET and IEP meetings, writing measurable goals for specific outcomes.
  • Provide instruction in orientation and mobility skills, including concept development, sensory development, low vision skills, and cane techniques for safe travel.
  • Collaborate with the student's IEP team.
  • Complete documentation accurately and on time, including Medicaid billing and IEP development.
  • Stay current in practices related to orientation and mobility and technology for students with visual impairments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Security Clearance:
