Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) is currently accepting applications for a motivated intern to support multi-disciplinary engineering tasks related to materials informatics, artificial intelligence software development, and hands-on laboratory practice with a team of engineers at the AMA Hampton, VA office, beginning Spring 2025. The selected applicant will contribute to laboratory investigation of hot-pressed metallic materials including processing, structural characterization, and mechanical property testing; the selected applicant will also be tasked with combining datasets to support the development of a materials informatics software package. The qualified candidate will be a junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student. Specific tasks may include laboratory-scale hot-pressing of metallic powders, microstructural characterization (i.e., SEM), mechanical property testing (i.e., microhardness testing), curation of experimentally acquired data, and software development of a machine learning based model for optimized experimental design to satisfy multiple target requirements (i.e., active learning modeling). At the end of the program, the intern will gain hands-on experience working in a research environment applying technical skills in laboratory processing and characterization, and in developing integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) tools to support cutting-edge research in aerospace materials applications. Responsibilities

The successful applicant will assist AMA’s engineering team perform analyses on a range of advanced materials for aerospace subjects, which may include the following tasks.

  • Performing literature reviews, developing models, and performing data analysis to define the design space and identify knowledge gaps.
  • Assisting in the development of presentation and reporting materials to NASA and related agency stakeholders.
  • Presenting and communicating technical data to an internal multidisciplinary team and on occasion customer stakeholders.

Specific responsibilities will be dependent on strengths and interests of each intern ranging from:

  • Materials engineering tasks laboratory-scale materials processing, characterization, and mechanical testing.
  • Technical tasks such as machine learning model development.
  • Leadership opportunities such as organizing engineering sprints.
  • Technical writing and documentation of projects and engineering processes.

Requirements

  • Completion of at least 3 years of an undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in a materials laboratory research setting, including specimen preparation for SEM and SEM operation
  • Experience or exposure to integrated computational materials engineering work.
  • Technical writing experience with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to a diverse team.

Desired Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering or a related field.
  • The ideal candidate would be a graduate student or have several years of graduate level education and research.
  • Project experience working with interdisciplinary teams on laboratory research of metallic powder processing, including machine learning model development for materials research applications.
  • Published proposal, research/professional scientific article, paper, or conference presentation.
  • Experience using GIT, numerical methods, and software optimization techniques.
  • Individual with self-starter attitude and strong organizational skills.
  • Previous exposure to metallic powder processing techniques such as hot-pressing.

Not all desired qualifications are necessary or expected from applicants. Tasks will be assigned based on applicant’s interest, niche skills, and strengths.
