Under the supervision of the Day Camp Director, the Day Camp Assistant Director is responsible for specific aspects of the summer camp program including organization, implementation, and maintenance of summer camp program, camper development, staff development, and maintaining good public relations with parents, affiliate programs and participants. The Day Camp Assistant Director works with the Day Camp Counselors and Day Camp Coordinator to ensure a high quality Day Camp experience.
Essential Functions
- Assist the Day Camp Director in the overall development of Day Camp programs with an emphasis on age-appropriate programming.
- Create, distribute, and maintain accurate records and reports in compliance with state licensing and program requirements such as sign-in/check-out sheets, lesson plans, children enrollment attendance sheets, newsletters, etc.
- Assist with getting supplies, snacks and meals ready for Day Camp needs.
- Ensure that the care of participants is a key priority through direct supervision of the programs and through support to staff in the absence of the Day Camp Director.
- Maintain communication with staff as it relates to program needs.
- Communicate professionally with parents and facility personnel about camp needs.
- Understand and follow all state licensing, YoungStar, DCF standards, and YMCA policies/manuals.
- Demonstrate a positive and caring attitude while building relationships with children, staff, parents and community members.
- Be committed to the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee’s Child Abuse/Neglect Prevention efforts as a mandatory reporter.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- A bachelor’s degree in child development, education, sports and recreation or related field from an accredited college/university is required.
- CPR and First Aid, Abusive Head Trauma must be completed before the first day of camp.
- Must complete fingerprinting requirement prior to working first shift.
- Must have 2+ years’ experience working in an organized child program.
- Must have 2+ years supervisory experience.

- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work with diverse populations.
- Effective written and oral communications skills.
- Must possess organizational skills and be able to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to create a fun environment, be flexible and share enthusiasm with teachers, participants, families and community.
- Must be able to demonstrate understanding, patience, creativity, cooperation, common sense, and commitment when working with youth and their families.
- Proficient in computer operations that are necessary to perform job.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 30 pounds frequently.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supports Day Camp Director in interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; supervising and evaluating employees; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
